Tea expert Dr Tim Bond explains how to make the healthiest cup of tea with the help of TV presenter Cherry Healey and the Women's Institute.

Brewing tea longer increases the level of antioxidants called flavonoids, also found in fruit and vegetables, which may help in the fight against heart disease and cancer by neutralising harmful chemicals in the blood.

Britain's Favourite Supermarket Foods will be broadcast on Wednesday 15 February at 20:00 GMT on BBC One or catch up later via the BBC iPlayer.

... or just do more steeps (which increases cumulative brewing time)!

+1 Also keeps your tea warmer to drink + much more gentle (healthy I dare say?) on the body then an extended long steep

Doesn't matter how 'healthy' it is, I wouldn't touch a 10 minutes infusion of an aggressive young sheng. But give me the same tea and do it gongfu style, with 20 infusions or so, and I'll have enjoyed drinking 10-20 minutes' cumulative steeping by the end.

Although I do not drink tea for its health benefits ... directly ... I do drink it as a healthy alternative to much worse alternatives ...

Having said that, you have to be able to drink the tea in order to derive these so called health benefits. If a cuppa is undrinkable after a 10 minute steep, how often are you likely to drink tea? Likely once or twice. And in turn have zero health benefits from tea thereafter.

This.

I love nothing more than listening to clueless experts. Why not strive to brew the tea so it tastes its best? That way you'll drink more.

Enjoyment, satisfaction is healthy.
Taking the time to brew a fine cup of tea has to be good for you.

I only seen some of the show, my better half decided we should turn it off as I was beginning to shout at the television.

You're not alone here Tony, I inflicted it on Chip and a few others too. I think Chip keeps the taste at bay by drinking litres of secha every day, might be worth a shot.

When I saw Tony's reference to a tasting of this rather vile brew, I smiled thinking he must have been in on this tasting as well.

I got through one session at the time ... barely. It was a hair raising experience. And a few years later another try ... it was as bad as the first.

It remains in my pu-erh sample drawer (yeah yeah, I know it is not pu-erh) where my heirs may find it one day and may suspect foul play in my demise.

It certainly has the most medicinal taste I ever encountered in a tea.
