Yunnan Jig vs. Yunnan Gold

I got a sample of Yunnan Gold and absolutely fell in love with it. However, that stuff is pricey! I was wondering how the Yunnan Jig compared with it. It's a whole lot cheaper and I don't really have the extra money to be throwing around.

The Gold is more Yunnany, but the Jig is good as well. I think most people prefer the Gold.

I must agree. The Jig is much more Jiggy, if you can get with that.

...ahem. I do think Yunnan Jig is a decent substitute if Yunnan Gold is too pricey for you. It'll satisfy that taste for Yunnan, but it's just not quite as buttery and savoury as the Gold. Try a sample; they're interesting to compare side by side.

For me, the gold was an acquired taste. I really didn't like it at first but by the end of the 4oz tin I was hooked. Still, I have to say if I had to choose between the two I would choose the jig. I brewed a cup of the gold for my son-in-law who is from England. He grew up drinking tea. He thought the gold was too spicy. His normal drink is Lipton, using two bags per cup.

i recently ordered some "pure gold". I'd assume this would be all the flavor of the gold part? cant wait!

Yunnan Gold is one of my all-time faves. I just bought a 4-oz can... price be damned! I probably have over 100 samples of tea from Adagio and elsewhere, but my two "drink all the damn time" teas are Yunnan Gold and Godpaldhara Wonder Tea Darjeeling (which sadly, Adagio doesn't sell -- yet).

I agree with you completely. Yunnan Gold is very smooth, bold, yet elegant but somehow it lacks the "refinement", fragrance, and sweetness of Golden Monkey.

Maybe this is because Yunnan teas are often made from C. Sinensis var. Assamica while more northern teas like those from Fujian are made from C. Sinensis var. Sinensis . Just a guess.

Gold is much better

Jig is ok, but Yunnan gold is wonderful, my favorite tea of all. Check out yunnan sourcing for a cheaper alternative, or yun cha on ebay. I have never tasted a better tea.

Which Yunnan Sourcing Yunnan teas have you tried? I find a Gold, Gold Tips, and Small Bud, with smallest sizes of 250 grams (half a pound). You must go through a lot of Gold! Don't you get frustrated with the long delivery times and shipping costs?

Yunnan gold from china

I bought the regular gold 500g last time like the size of a small pillow. I think it was $20 plus shipping. I really like PU erh tea so I buy about $100 worth of stuff at a time shipping is about $20-25 or so, i don't mind waiting, I still have tea at home. My last two shipments where unusually fast less than a month each! i was suprised. This summer it took over 2 months. the seller is really reliable, but it comes on a slow boat from china.

I say Yun Cha had some type of premium gold bud tea, I might try in the future, but I still have about 400g of gold left.

(Old thread)

Where I work, they keep a big bag of Rishi Yunnan Gold tea... yai! what a luxury! with a spot of honey and a touch of milk... a very nice afternoon break.

I tried the Yunnan Jig in the Adagio sampler and find it quite agreeable (along with Gold MOnkey), and for the price, I will buy JIG for home use (since my employer is happy to spring for the GOLD fix!)

As I work thru the sampler, I'm finding the Yunnans (Gold/Jig?monkey) to be my faves.
