Which country's BLACK tea reigns supreme on TeaChat?
I thought about further breaking this down by region or type, but that started to get very complicated...another poll for another day, perhaps. I am working on it.
While you are voting, please post about your favorite BLACK tea. I know for me this changes all the time, so, it could be interesting to see where everyone is today.

I don't really drink a lot of black tea. I do like Assams, so I'm inclined to vote for India, but at the same time I had a dian hong not long ago that was pretty darn good, so I also want to vote for China. I just got a sample of Taiwanese black tea, so I'll try that out and get back to you...

Golden Monkey is all right with me. Last years batch of Keemun was way too smoky (maybe it was the year before, I forget) and I haven't tried it since. I have been able to take iced Yunnan in small doses lately, but still I can't drink a lot of it. The smell of it hot just is not good with me. I am sure there are old posts around here about my feelings on it, but I will say it again anyway. It reminds me of hay. I couldn't even have it sitting on my desk!

I voted India, but to be more specific my favorite is Darjeeling.Chip wrote:Which country's BLACK tea reigns supreme on TeaChat?

Scruff, I have always thought that Darjeeling was the strangest looking black tea. So, I have to agree with you, perhaps a little out of ignorance since I have not really studied much about Darjeeling teas compared to Chinese, mainly because my heart is Asian, not Indian.
But just looking at many Darjeelings, has always made me suspicious of their black classification, and then the brewing parameters are more green or oolong than black.
blah blah blah SENCHA blah blah blah!!!
I haven`t drinked a lot of chinese or japanese black tea. I`ve had a 70% fermented taiwanese Grand Wu Long Top Fancy, but strictly speaking that is not black tea (it`s good though ).
I have some experience with indian black tea, especially Darjeeling teas. My favorite black tea so far is the Darjeeling second flush muscatel modified (insects that eat on the plants and gives a slight change of taste) from the Puttabong tea garden. That tea has the really dark notes like wood and some tobacco notes while at the same time it has the sweeter notes of honey and dried fruits like prune.
Another good Darjeeling is the Darjeeling first flush from the Singbulli garden. It has to be the fruitiest Darjeeling I`ve tasted, there are hints of mango. In addition there are some floral notes. Very tasty and refreshing.
However, lately I`ve drunk more green than black tea, but still I enjoy a cup with good Darjeeling ever now and then
