Gaiwan and black tea?

Does it match? Can I brew a nice cuppa darjeeling in my gaiwan (i loove to brew with it ). And I guess if so I should more leaves?
Havent seen this mentioned anywhere on gaiwan brewing guides but perhaps theres a good reason...

I believe it is against the TeaLaws of the United States, so just don't come here and do it.

If it works, why not? Probably not a BOP though. But drink quickly since Darjeeling can be too astringent if left in water too long, or decant.

Funny you should ask...

I gong fu-ed black tea in a gaiwan earlier today, a Yunnan and a Keemun, with great results. I went with a ratio of 1 g per 30 ml and steeped for 30 seconds.

I don't think one could brew and consume a black tea from a gaiwan with favorable results. With black tea you need boiling water, and I think the tea would become quite harsh by the time it was cool enough to drink. So as long as you decant the tea into another cup or sharing pitcher or what not, you should be fine.

I have tried brewing Darjeeling in a gaiwan before, and frankly I thought it was terrible. I don't know why it seemed to translate so poorly to one of my favorite brewing tools, but it did. Maybe you will have better luck, though!

Gaiwan brewing is acceptable for all loose leaf teas. As long as of course it isn't that shredded stuff! I have brewed both Black and DJ using my Gaiwan. It works just fine!

I use my gaiwan to make black tea, no problems.

In fact, I'd use a yixing for one..... but I don't really make black tea often enough.

I use a gaiwan for all my black tea brewing. It works perfectly. 1 tsp/100mL/208°f/3 minutes hasn't turned out a bad brew yet. If it's very broken up, you'll need a filter.

I don't think you're asking about drinking it from the gaiwan. If that's on your mind, I wouldn't recommend it.
