2008 crop Yunnan black?

by Bubba_tea » Aug 15th, '08, 17:03

Anyone try the new 2008 crop of Yunnan black / gold teas? If so, how do they compare to the 2007 crop?

Who has them in yet? Seems the shops around here don't have them in yet.

Teaspring
Teacuppa
Goldenteahouse

That's what I could find so far. Looks like it's the golden yunnans mostly - maybe the darker / more oxidized ones aren't out yet.

Well - I got the teacuppa golden yunnan in - and man... I almost had it.

Fleeting..

Years of searching again for that one true strong black pepper yunnan

For a moment, the exhilaration of lifting the lid and a wiff of black pepper

And then

Nothing

All is blackness

Nothing endures

OK - that last pu cha qi must have been a little wacky! :P But - I almost had it. I tried brewing it several more times to get that flavor, but I might have overdid the brews for the evening. So far, that 2008 crop golden was pretty good.. we'll keep the eye out for the reviews of others.

I know the feeling... there is a fair amount of decent and high-grade Yunnan out there, but the best batch I've ever had was over the top, and I haven't been able to find its equal elsewhere...

I'm pretty sure this was the over-the-top batch I had last year, but I don't think they have the same batch this year.

I'll wait to see how their batch turns out for 2008. I think I tried about 12 different dian hongs last year - and just wrote it off to a bad year... but we'll see this year. This 2008 from teacuppa is the first one I have for a golden - and it's much better so far. BTW - I also received their yunnan red-tip and yunnan black - and their basic black is disgusting. Well.. maybe not if you like the taste of Kam Wo Cha!! (Cantonese cough medicine tea).

One- or two-year-old Yunnan blacks are sometimes said to be better than fresher ones.

Oops, my bad. Actually, I just saw an article about arsenic poisoning in Chinese black tea. Oh ... and dysentery too, I think.

I love that mnemonic! One we had was for Chan Tui - cicada shells

Event (vents measles, weeping lesions)
tastes
better
than
horse (hoarse voice)
eye (conjunctivitis)
shakes (convulsions, tetanus)

Mmmm... make mine a double!

My favorite Yunnan gold for the last three years is eventually available at Palais des Thés.

Good news they also have Keemun Mao Feng Imperial which had been out of stock for almost two years.

I ordered one bag of each just to get sure they are as good as usual before buying more and I will give my impressions when I get them.

lol i take it you are in healthcare?

I second the notion of tasty 1 year-old yunnan, at least the high end stuff. I just finished my 07 yunnan sourcing pure gold, it was still great.

again, i've got the Special Teas competition grade at the moment, which is as good as the YS, bit more expensive though. Has anyone tried the TeaSpring gold?

I used lots of mnemonics when studying nursing and in grad school... most of which involve some delicate part of the female anatomy. Men must make these up! But I never forgot the one for the 12 cranial nerves in order...

Oh (olfactory)
Oh (optic)
Oh (Oculomotor)
To (trochlear)
Touch (trigeminal)
And (abducens)
Feel (facial)
A (auditory/vestibulocochlear)
Girl's (glossopharnygeal)
V__ (vagus)
So (spinal accessory)
Heavenly (hypoglossal)

And then to remember if each nerve is sensory, motor, or both... you do this mnemonic list to correspond to the nerve list above:

Some
Say
Marry
Money
But
My
Brother
Says
Bad
Business
Marry
Money

And this concludes our daily lesson on cranial nerve mnemonics.
