Namasté

Hello again my friends, I'm just checking in. I've disappeared for a bit but hopefully I can find some time to check in to TC every once in a while.

There have been some great changes in my life during the past few months, some for the better and some terrible tragedies including the loss of a young friend of mine during the recent October snow storm.

But to focus on the good, I quit my bank job and was hired as an IT Specialist making more than twice what I'd made before in a job that I'm much more suited for.

I've been immersing myself in the Nepali culture, learning the language and working with immigrants and refugees from Nepal and Bhutan. I've met some amazing people and it's opened my eyes to a whole new style of life... not to mention I've drank lots and lots of chiya (chai) and have made friends with a few people who've lived on tea farms.

I'm so busy these days, but that is good, it keeps me from getting depressed, the only down side is making time for good tea, which I am fortunately able to do this morning- I'm having a Tibetan Hei Cha (Ya Xi grade) in a small hongni pot, it's surprising how good this is! I wasn't expecting much!

Just checking in, I've lived on my own for about 4 months now, really enjoying it, I have a nice quiet apartment with a tea-porch ^_^

Still enjoying learning Nepali and making new friends, it's an eye opening experience, to be able to enter a culture of people who are largely refugees who've experienced things you could never imagine, it's humbling and makes you feel very blessed for what you have that you take for granted.

I've been mostly drinking greens lately, and on occasion a cup of Taiwanese oolong, much of my tea intake these days contains lots of milk and sugar because this is how the Nepali people make chia. It grows on you but nothing can replace a simple cup of tgy.

I've also eaten some very strange foods, like goat heart and (believe it or not) chicken feathers with smashed up bones, bitter gourd, rice and curry... true 3rd world food! I have not made it anywhere special as far as traveling but there are some plans in the mix... I'll fill you guys in when things are more definite.

Bhutan has been this kind of media darling because they came up with a "gross happiness index" or whatever. But the story as it's been explained to me is that they kicked out some ethnic minorities, because that was the easiest way to make the ethnic majority happier ;) So, many wound up in Nepal. Some ultimately came to the States. I have a Friend who is involved with Nepali refugees in Philadelphia. Some apparently not-too-bright social worker settled a Nepali refugee couple in my friend's neighborhood, which is kind of well-off, has below-average transit access, little social services offices, and no other Nepalis. So my friend and her church got together to support the couple, who had a baby. Then the couple started contacting their relatives abroad, and thus a new Nepali enclave was born...! :o

Haha, that is how most of these Nepali neighborhoods form. But they are very sweet people who can be completely lost in a society like America... many of the refugees were born in the camps and never knew what it was like to have anything like electricity, plumbing, cold food, etc. I'll fill you guys in with my trip to Nepal in another post. I learned a lot and had some great experiences.
