Derrida & the Gang, or why TeaChat is Awesome.

by Aphroditea » Apr 22nd, '08, 20:00

Moderator's Note: This was originally part of the "I'm having problems with TeaChat..." thread. After Ilya answered the OP's question, the thread abruptly turned to literary theory. So I split the thread for the sake of everyone's sanity. --Mary

It wasn't my fault officer! ;)
I did ask about tea (I'll be trying that tuo cha, btw, guys) - somehow we lost focus though. And I bet Derrida drinks tea :)

The ladies have always been perfect ladies in the IM. The problems are invariably the boys, usually me. Unfortunately, sometimes in the evenings, it sounds like a boys' high school bathroom, and I feel quite sure that atmosphere discourages a lot of valuable feminine insight and comraderie as well as a fair number of men. More often than not I know that I am the one to set that tone or to egg it on, so I promise to be better. Chip, don't hesitate to PM me a slap on the hand. I have all the intuition of a tree stump, but I can read English!

As for Derrida, I happen to know for a fact that he does not drink tea, as he was deconstructed by his maker on October 8, 2004.

I'm pretty certain Derrida would hate our tea blogs though, heh.

How the HELL did this conversation go from the messed up IM to Jacques Derrida? No, never mind. I don't even want to question that bit of insanity.

Question everything, Mary, question everything ...and deconstruct like nobody's business.

Yankees? I didn't know they could play right now. I thought all the ice had melted.

Wait. What? OH, BASEBALL. I'm sorry.

Go Expos!

You haven't tried offering him a cup of spirit tea (with a splash of ectoplasm)...

Just don't tell him what the flavor profile is before you give it to him.

OMG, I can't believe you guys are talking about Derrida. Seriously. My brother is all about this guy. You can check out his work here: http://www.carywolfe.com/post_about.html *if* you must. (He's *not* a tea drinker: reader beware: he's a literary theorist. ugh.)

Well, we could first determine what structures tea is associated with - I'm gonna go with three biggies; religion, social class and politics. Then we can begin to deconstruct those bounds and start our search for the underlying meanings of tea. Then once we know those meanings we can critically ask ourselves if these point to Truth or simply to life narratives upon which meaning has been heaped.

THEN - we can go to Foucault and discover what types of knowledge about tea creates power dynamics within its spheres of influence. Here, I am sure, we will get good conversations about the benefits and detractors to being a tea snob :)

We TeaChatters are all going mad from not having our TeaChat Room.

And now all that Algonquin Round Table-esque energy is spilling over (sorry) onto the rest of the forum.

To be honest, I am now way in over my head with this deconstruction business; how did you learn so much about it, Aphroditea? Grad school?
