Box pass or tea swap?

by Drax » Oct 19th, '09, 08:00

Okay, so it sounds like people want to start another box pass or something similar. The question for you is this -- would you prefer to participate in a box pass or a tea swap?

A box pass means that one box will travel from person to person. It will take about 1 week at each stop, depending on how fast that person is at tasting tea and moving it on to the next person. Typically you add tea to cover the tea that you take, and hopefully of similar quality (or you add more if you're feeling generous). The box pass would be limited to people who have been around TeaChat for at least 3 months, maybe 6. A box typically starts to get a very large number of samples (30+), and can sometimes be a dumping ground for unused tea (should be less of a problem for pu'erh). The list is continually updated to try to avoid deadbeats. This method runs a high risk of losing a box forever to "that one guy" (or even just the Post Office).

A tea swap would involve breaking all participants into small groups of 3-5. Each person would then send 3-5 tea samples to the other 3-5 people. Depending on how people wanted to organize this, we could organize people into groups based on experience (either trying to keep people of similar experience together, or purposefully mix groups for education/training) or a variety of other ways. And organization could be based on preference of person, if we have enough people. Benefits to this include shorter wait time (ideally everybody gets tea in the first week). Probably a bit more time intensive to set up 3-5 packages, and then put in the time to taste upon receiving. We could probably open this one up to people who have been to TeaChat for 1 month.

In either of these cases, it would be nice if people posted their experiences with the tea. In the case of the tea swap, the group should try to post their experiences with their teas and compare notes. This is probably as close to an in-person tasting group as you'll get via the internet.

Please vote how you would like to participate. I think I have written the descriptions so that they favor one of the methods of the other. If you have counterpoints or pros/cons, please post. Or if you have an idea for another method, please describe it.

Oh, and I'm just stepping up here to start pushing this forward into reality. If somebody else really wants to organize this, just say the word, you won't hurt my feelings. :D

I'm down for a puerh or oolng tea swap as described.

Can we, as a community, come up with a standard set of guidelines for both a swap and box pass? I see many posts, all with different terms/conditions. We should also try to regulate it more (PayPal deposit held by moderator to be refunded at end of swap/box?).

A box pass just sounds more fun to me :D If we do a box pass... I want to be nearer to the bottom of the list. I need more time to build up my collection so that I may offer something a bit more palatable to the next person. If I can't be nearer to the end of the list.... then I hope you all like younger menghai recipes

I like the box pass idea, and participated in the previous one, however, putting all ones eggs in one basket (so to say) has proved unreliable.

One issue with the sample route is shipping. Rather than one large shipment , which can be done via a flat rate USPS box, you need a few smaller shipments.

Cross country, a 4 oz large envolope is $1.39 for first class. So five people to send to would be $7.00, not including the cost of envolopes.

The largest flat rate box is $13.95, which includes box.

We could do 10 people in a group for the same shipping cost.

10 10 gram samples of 6 teas is 600 grams to both send out and recieve. That might be too much for some people to cut out of their collection ...

So it might depend on how much tea people wish to part with in order to set the group size.

The most "interesting" cake I have in my collection is the Xiaguan "Instant Sensation." The idea of a box pass sounds like fun, but at the same time it can lack focus/direction, and there is a certain amount of risk involved. Also, for people who are at the bottom of a list the time it can take just to reach them might be unbearable.

A Tea Swap, although pricey in terms of shipping, can get more people to sample more things more quickly. However, that being said, some people aren't going to have much to contribute, especially if they're beginners, which is my case. Unless we can swap samples that we get, because I have the weight of 2 357g cakes in samples...

If we're going down the tea swap route, maybe we can organize these things monthly, so some of us have time to build a proper collection? And maybe strike a balance between seasoned veterans and neophytes? But if it's going to be a tea swap, I call dibs on breaking up my cake of the Xiaguan FT "Instant Sensation"!

Hrm, looks like the vote is relatively split. Could be tough...

May just start a box and then do a small tea-swap on the side. Will let this go until Sunday and then go from there.

Only got 7 votes. Hardly representative. Forum is pretty quiet right now. Maybe wait a bit before deciding?

All the forum seem quiet, but maybe that just means I'm checking TeaChat way too many times than warranted.
I think if it's going to be this quiet, maybe a tea pass would be better, since it's quicker to do. I also think there's the advantage of having opinions about a tea going at the same time, which is something you can't really do with a box...but maybe this has been pointed out.

I personally would prefer the tea swap. The Box Pass sounds like there could be a lot of possible problems. Besides, I live in China, and it would cost a fortune to send it to me and back, so I couldn't join.

I like the idea of a tea swap because if it is 3 to 5 people, the members can get to know each other better and a friendship might blossom.

Couldn't we just do both? Those who are interested in the Box Pass could do that and those interested in the Tea Swap could do that.

Last time..... I think the box ended up with someone, and he moved, and then the box was lost.... or something like that.

So Box Pass has issues. It also limits the number of non-US members to participate, since the cost (and the time) is very high/long.

I like both ideas. Seems like the tea swap is more reliable and you wouldn't have to wait around so long before the tea gets to you.

How would the tea swap work? Where would you post what teas you have available to swap? Would it just be via messaging or is there a way we could display all the teas we have so that others can "browse". On facebook there are some exchange/trade groups where the members put a picture of their trade items on one of their photo albums so others can see what they have. Something like that might be a little much right now.

It makes perfect sense to me that waiting until members are established to participate is necessary. However, being newly in love with tea, I find myself wanting the exposure to different teas etc, to facilitate my growing love and learning.

I wonder if there could be some way that motivated beginners could "become initiated" quicker in order to prove reliability and participate?

As long as you don't force me to drink lipton, I'd do almost anything.

One way we did a tea swap a long time ago was that it was all sent to one person, and then he repackaged them all and sent them out again. It takes work on the organizer's part.

I'd vote swap for this very reason. Heck, you could even do it that Canadian (and etc.) residents could swap amongst themselves so people save on shipping. I don't mind paying more to ship out of the country, but I know most people aren't willing to pay to ship to me.
