Were you ever able to contact Taetea to confirm for certain that cakes with that line are fake?

I emailed them, they never replied. But I don't think there's much of a doubt, as there were only two pressings of the 2011 Gold Dayi and people that have cakes from both pressings do not have this line on the wrapper of either. (Besides, and more importantly, there is also the fact that these fake cakes look very different).

My girlfriend asked around on a Chinese forum, too, with most members there (including Cloud) agreeing that it was likely to be fake.

DHT said they would contact their supplier immediately to find out what's been going on, but I don't know whether they did (or what answer they got), and the tea is still available for the same price at their webpage, so my impression (which may or may not be justified, although if it's not I think the vendor would have everything to gain by shedding some light on the matter publicly) is that they are still selling these.

Let us know if Dragon Tea House responds further. It would be nice to see them stop selling the cake at least. I would like to think they didn't know it was a fake.

Honestly, the chance of that is pretty low - anyone who's spent some time in tea markets in China can tell that thing is a fake.

Here are some more in depth thoughts from me on this issue as a whole.

It has almost as much to do with price as it does with the observation of the cake. No supplier would sell the cake for this price.

In addition to that, the wrappers and tickets do not match. If you deal in a lot of Dayi, knowing wrappers is as important as knowing tea. Dayi fakes are abundant, even for lesser known cakes.

Well in this case there's basically no way DTH doesn't know they're selling a fake.

I guess I should have phrased that less aggressively, because I do not know them and have no experience with DTH.

My only point is that most Dayi dealers are very familiar with Dayi products. And once a certain production becomes popular, it would be very unlikely that they would have and sell that production far below market value.

For example, most Dayi wholesalers in Beijing haven not had the 2011 Gold Dayi in stock for well over a year. If they do have stock, the price is usually higher than Taobao. (They have rent to pay as brick and mortar stores, so prices are usually slightly higher)

Hi guys, I have finally concluded that my Jin Dayi from SampleTea is also fake.

I have made a thorough comparison with the pictures in the link, gently provided by Apache. The easier thing to check for me was the thinness of the cake. Specially when reaching the edges.

What I did was to compare the thinness of it with other Dayi cakes that I have. Which I've bought from Scott , from whom so far, I haven't heard any complaints when it comes to the authenticity of his products.

Guess what, the cake from sample tea (also the one from DTH) is not as thin as my other cakes towards the edge.

That aside it tastes too smoky. I don't recall my other dayi cakes being so smoky so much so that it recalls some Xiaguan products.
Perhaps some teas from Dayi, had some smoke in the aroma, but not so much in the taste like in this case.

Some of my pictures are not very good but if anyone like to see more decent pictures I could try to take better ones and upload them. I haven't taken pictures of the thinness for comparison but I can do that as well if anyone like to see it.

The photo of the top view of cake from SampleTea looks ok to me though!
Regarding to the edge thinness, I haven't got a picture of the Jin Dayi yet, but here is 3 other cakes for comparison:

The compression of recently cakes from Dayi including Jin Dayi are not as thigh as cakes from 2006?, 2007, 2008. Edge only looks thin if the cakes been compressed very tight and it is still intact. If it is broken up during shipping or any other recent, it will appear to be thicker. I think the only sure way to authenticate it is it's taste. All Dayi teas have a house style which is almost like a signature across all its products.

You are absolutely right about that.

I haven't drunk so much Dayi. But to remind me of that I have drunk an organic Bada 2009 and Yi Jia Ji Tuo. They both share some house style as you said, in particular when it comes to flavour I believe. But I don´t think they share that with my Jin Dayi teas :S.

I will post some pictures of the cakes in daylight.

By the way, thanks for sharing your pics.

To my mind, the sampletea jin dayi is fake. the vertical hologram on the neifei must disappear totally beetween each piece.

remember this thread: http://www.teachat.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=12141

exactly the same problem with the vertical hologram

Another problem with the neifei: the TAETEA emblem must be at the center breadthwise. you can see it is not on the sampletea one
