TomVerlain wrote:I chose 10-15 Kg, which is about 50 cakes worth. Since there are lots of cakes in varying degrees of finished, it is about right. Probably half of that is untouched and has been sitting 5 years. After looking at my last big purchase from Taiwan - probably 5Kg - I think I should have moved to the next bracket up.

From a sporadic puerh drinker, it can really catch up on you quickly, I just did a brief count in my head and I am on the high end of 1-5 KG. That is quite scary as I am lucky to have even one session of Puerh in a given month. Aged puerh I do a bit more when it is cold out. But still nearly 5kg of puerh consuming it at likely 100g a year.... that is a basically a life time supply for me. :?

More than 1, but probably a lot closer to 1 than to 5. It's not a lifetime supply, but certainly several years' worth at present consumption.

It's interesting to see what people consider a lifetime of puerh. Some drink 100 grams a year, some 100 a month, and yet sometimes I find myself drinking a 100 grams a week if I'm extra thirsty  I think, on average, I probably drink between 2-3 kilos of sheng puerh a year. If I live to 80 that means I will drink 155 kilos of tea starting now. Lets say I lose 10 kilos between sharing, crap tea, mold, etc. That means I need to purchase 165 kilos for a lifetime supply or 148 more kilos or 415 more 357 gram cakes. Let the buying begin

I think it depends on personal preference. I mean while I would never really want to have 5,000g of Sencha/ shincha or Gyokuro on hand, I would not consider those anywhere near a life time supply, heck those might only be slightly over a years worth for me. But as this is a discussion of puerh I went with realistically how much/ often I brew Puerh. Now in retrospect in the past month alone I likely have brewed 60+ grams of Shincha, and 75 grams of Gaoshan.

if you consume somewhere around the small amount of ten grams a day you will need approximately ten cakes a year. So if you have 100 cakes that will only last you ten years of every day consumption. so if you are planning on actually seeing any of your tea truly age. Than you need at least 200 cakes. That is assuming you buy new tea. These are the kinds of justifications I give my wife anyway.
