Pu erh storage question

by Senchamatcha » Aug 3rd, '14, 19:37

I've ordered some puerh samples, if I like them a buy a whole cake... what is the best way to store them?
I live in Florida, about 10 minutes from the coast, near Orlando/Disney. Florida tends to be on the warm side even in winter and is humid year round. I tried to find an appropriate place in my house to store the puerh. I thought the top of my bookcase would be a great place. I am allergic to perfume-stuffs so i never spray that in my bed room nor do i use strong smelling things in my room. I occasionally spray EO or burn incense in my bathroom (which is down the hall).
Any advice?

I bought a hygrometer a couple of months ago and knowing exactly what my RH and temperature are has helped me greatly in making storage decisions. For example, it's currently 8:45AM and my temp is 27.6 and RH 85%. My hygrometer also gives me the high/low since the previous midnight, in my case 86/77. When asking for help, this info helps people help me.
Are you considering using air conditioning? I'm on the fence about it but one thing I wish I'd known before I bought all of mine is that an underpowered one will lower the humidity a lot in the room because the condenser stays on all the time, while an overpowered one, which a Thai salesperson will always talk you into buying, will not lower the humidity at all because the condenser is constantly shutting off, even in dry mode.
Long story short, my vendor in Bangkok, who knows that Chiang Mai is more humid than Bangkok, recommended that I put my tea (I have tongs of mini bings) in ziplock bags for the rainy season (now) and take them out for the dry season when temp and humidity will be much lower.

There's so many opinions an discussions on this your best bet will be to search for threads on storage, read as many as you can, and experiment with your own tea.

I tried four samples: a 2008, 2009, 2013, and 2014. The only one I liked was the 2014! I guess my storage question is null and void.
Well, nice to know I probably could have stored puerh if i wanted to.
