Pu'er for diabetics

by puyuan » Apr 27th, '15, 18:07

Hey.

I'm having a couple of friends for tea in a few days and decided to brew them some nice yancha and adolescent puer. The guy is diabetic. I know there isn't much trouble with regular tea, but the pu'er I picked is a rather strong LBZ. It gets me tea drunk fast. I remembered that thing about tea drunkenness being basically a sugar imbalance in the body, and immediately the question came to mind if it would be bad for him. He had a severe case of ketoacidosis a few months ago, so I'd rather be cautious.

Does anyone know if there's reason for worry? Thanks in advance.

Tell him to bring his glucometer and check periodically... it would be interesting to know

Drinking tea won't make his blood sugar go up, but it can make his blood sugar go down. For a healthy person it can make you feel a bit dizzy if you're drinking tea without snacks but depending on what he's eaten recently and how much insulin he's injected that could be a problem for your friend? maybe?

Just have snacks available and tell him to check his glucose levels if he's feeling dizzy to be on the safe side. I think snacks with strong tea are a good idea anyway :)

Thank you both! I'll see how he responds. Worst case scenario, I'll just pour a few rounds of yancha.

If the guy is type 1 diabetic, probably more care is needed, not only in the drink, but in the snacks as well. Well controlled type 2 is pretty fine, I think.

I don't remember now but I'll make sure to ask. And I'll have some candy around, just if. I was with them after he went to hospital, that's definitely something I don't want to see happening again.
