dude, i just had some of the King of Pu-erh, and i was like... OMG OOOOHMG (in a mature way) - in comparison to what i had just tasted in the Year of Green

It's under "Green Selected" here. If it's as good as people seem to be saying, I'm a bit hesitant to break my cake up! Maybe I'll order a sample so I can taste it without doing that.

oh, well, it has my kind of flavors which includes a small touch of "smokiness", and has pretty strong sweetness all over the mouth(but its not like sugar sugar), and also what felt like freshness? like after you finish brushing your teeth,...maybe mint-like? without the mint taste. almost no astringency (at end i left it ~4min, even that was not really more than mild astr).

but this was just a little leaf-i was just testing,
i got the sample http://www.puerhshop.com/index.php?main ... cts_id=293 (its not much, looks like i could do total ~3-4 'sessions' out of it)

i got very happy when i tasted, because yearofgreen has been like astringent green tea left around for 2 days type of flavors to me.

Thanks for info guys. Jim's search function sure didn't work for me on that one. The leaves are just incredible looking in the photo. I ordered a cake to add to the untasted pile that I already have!

With longer steep times, the Menghai Jewel gets a touch bitter, as expected, but the thing that I noticed most was how drying it is. It made my mouth and throat feel parched, like I really needed a drink of water. Is this the 'astringency' that people associate with young shengs?

I get this drying sensation also sometimes, and I don't like it. I don't think it is the same as astringency but maybe related. Astringency is a sort of puckery thing, not bitter, more a feel than a taste. That's why I think the drying may be related. Anyone else understand this issue better?

I would call it astringency. I remember reading a blog post some time ago from one of the long time bloggers (VL, Hobbes, Stephane, Marshall, etc.) about the different kinds of astringency; from a mild and pleasant astringency that induces some mouth watering to the horrible drying that leaves your mouth almost raw. Does anyone recall who wrote this?
