by heavydoom » Dec 27th, '08, 18:11

with your hands. no tools needed whatsoever. what does this fact tell you guys about this pu erh tea cake? just wanted to hear all you pu erh tea experts here what you think of a tea that is so. btw, this cake is also very light in weight.

any comments, snobby or otherwise, are most welcomed.

take care and have a nice day,

More info regarding age, etc please? I have some aged cakes that are like that but it's apparent they weren't necessarily loosely compressed to start with, just aged to the point of compost I guess. Most cakes loosen with age. (no comments about loosening with age from the peanut gallery please.) I'm pretty sure one of the 20+ year old touchas I have was a rock when it was younger, now I can almost pull off pieces with my hands.

Aging wouldn't account for it being lighter.

It could be that when it was getting pressed, the leaf bundle they used had less leaf than it should have, resulting in a loose cake.

i do think that aging makes a cake get looser. this cake in question looks like your typical menghai cake. the thinnish 357 gram varietal discus type. i need hardly any effort to tear off a drinkable piece. i have some loosely compressed cakes now and you still need an implement to get chunks.

+1

I've had cakes that could easily be loosened with fingers alone. Nada's Cha Chan Yi Wei and a Jinggu Ancient Tea Tree Dabaihao (white pu) come to mind. I'm sure stone pressing is required for this result, but some of the other excellent ideas advanced above by our panel of experts may also be at work.

Which weighs more- a pound of feathers or a pound of lead?

Stone molding yields a looser bing. I've had some Yongpinhao that I could pry apart by blowing on it. The other end of the spectrum would be Xiaguan level compression.

In that case a pound of feathers weighs more since it is measured in the avoirdupois system (1lb=7000g) and gold is measured in the troy system (1lb=5760g).

Just thought I would share that. A pound of feathers is heavier than a pound of gold.

Umm. Care to rethink that?

Careful with the units: a pound in the Avoirdupois system is 7000 grains, around 454g. A Troy pound is 5760gr, ~373g.

OK, what this tells me is that you have pretty light compression. If you just want to have some fun, pick up some Xiaguan FT cakes. Be careful not to hurt yourself with them.
Good tea drinking,
