Tea pot question (about oolong as well)

by bryan_drinks_tea » Oct 10th, '09, 22:05

So today I purchased my first yixing teapot. it holds around four ounces of water.
Basically, i'm unsure of what tea to season it with : a more oxidized and heavier baked oolong, or a lighter "greener" one. for example..
A baked TGY or a green TGY.
Does it make a difference that I use both kinds of oolong in the same pot?

thanks, :)

Bryan

Ideally you would have one for lighter and one for darker oolongs.
It won't ruin the pot or anything, but it is just best to keep the pot to similar flavor profiles.

There is your excuse to buy another pot!
Heh.

What type of clay? How thick is the pot? What shape is it?

Very generally speaking, thin pots are better for dan cong. Thicker is better for wuyi. Round pots better for rolled oolongs, flat pots better for long leafed teas.

There are lots of variables at play, and others here are waaaaaaaay better at picking pots for teas than I am. Try several different teas, and see which ones you like the results with.

Ok...This would be the standard Yixing clay..the bright red stuff. As I said before, I am new to this. As far as thickness goes, the pot is relatively thin. I would say the teapot is "round" so that means it would be better for rolled oolongs, such as a green TGY or something similar. I'm still gonna wait it out, though. I want to make the best choice possible.

thanks ting(and others)
oh, by the way, could you guys point me towards someone who could give me some insight on my tea pot as far as what I could be brewing in it?

I know it's of limited help, but most will probably tell you it's subjective and that you need to play around and find what you like. For example, when brewing wuyi, some people like a pot that hides any charcoal flavors while others prefer the raw experience with those flavors intact.

I just saw your pot over in the 'showoff' thread- I would say that given the round shape, rolled oolongs would be a good place to start experimenting. Hopefully chrl42, TIM, brandon, Maitre_Tea, or Tead Off might be able to make a better suggestion than I can.

 Good luck.
