Quangzhou Milk Oolong

by hop_goblin » Feb 5th, '09, 08:49

I was lucky enough to recieve a few samples (as some of you also were) from Davids tea, and one of the sachets contain what is called Quangzhou "Milk Oolong". I remember Scruff sometimes back mentioning this tea and asking questions. I remember that I suggests that pehaps that milk oolong was from a particlar cultivar called "JinXuan" a relatively new growth that gives off a creamy flavor; however, I believe I may have been wrong. Anyhow, I was mezmorized by this tea the moment opened the sachet - it really smells like cream and when brewed, warm milk. Very interesting. I finally did some research on the stuff and found that milk oolong is somewhat rare but not terribly expenisve. In fact, it is considered a defect in tea. It occurs when there is a sudden drop in temprature in particular fields which subsequently gives off this milky profile when processed. Its rare only because its happends by chance and not by limited plantings. There are also milk oolongs which are artifically flavored to taste this way. Great stuff.

Yeah I was really into one from TeaCuppa for awhile - then suddenly it just
sickened me. I have never had that happen with a tea before.
Strange. But I did love it for awhile.

if its possible for some of them to spike it with flavoring, is there anyway to know (flavor/smell/aspect) if its real or faked?

You just have to trust the vendor I guess. The one from TeaCuppa states it is natural.

I wasn't even aware there were flavorings added to some, until
I read it right here previously.

Jin Xuan do have a milky taste, too. At least that's my experience. But not more milky than some milky Tie Guan Yin, for example.
The noise comes from the other side of the mirror

I had exactly the same feelings about the sampler I´ve ordered from Teacuppa.

Yeah, I understand - I reordered it at least 2 times before it hit me wrong.
So enjoy!
