1/7/14 Most of the US is in a cold snap ... what Tea?

Welcome TCers to an extremely COLD TeaDay from the Mid-West to the Northeast, it is brutally cold and some places snowy.

I have been brewing and drinking my teas in mostly, white snowy cups for days now, just to fit the outside scenario. Really didn't realize I was doing this, intentionally or not. However, it brings me to the poll question and discussion ... 2 votes today.

Does the weather affect your Tea and Teaware selections?

As a bonus question, what type of tea do you drink more of as the weather gets cold?

I'm more likely to drink puerh when the weather is cold--or when the office is cold, which is more often the problem here in LA

But cold gray weather can equally serve as excuse for drinking a floral green oolong, or a rich vegetal sencha. Probably the stronger correlation for me is that when the weather is hot, my tea-taste runs greener--less puerh, less deep-roasted oolongs, because I associate those with warming up.

I break out the old sheng and gyokuro in the winter. Also a roasted oolong or two. Probably my most expensive tea time of the year. And barley tea at night...

Directly, not really. Indirectly, yes. I seasonally fluctuate to a rather minor degree compared to most members.

I begin drinking more Gyokuro during the Winter months ... but this is more of a logical thing than a weather thing. I figure current year's harvest sencha is coming to a close ... and Shincha cometh. I do not want to overload on Sencha purchases ... instead I want to ideally begin to run low and ultimately out as Shincha arrives.

Also, current harvest Gyokuro has now aged over 6 months and should be prime for enjoying precious dew.

Now that my climate is much colder, I have definitely found myself drinking more tea.

I voted green, but I don't know if that's accurate. In the cold I usually drink more houjicha than usual.

Apparently I'm in the minority because I don't think the weather really impacts the tea I drink. I'm such a creature of habit that once I establish a routine I'm hard pressed to change it!

So, the broad strokes of my tea routine have become: black in the morning, sencha/guricha/gyokuro in the afternoon, oolong (any level of green or roast) in the evening. :)

I used to have stronger opinions on this, now I'll take any tea as long as it is warm! This mornings DYL brewed light.

Cold weather makes me drowsy the second I set foot inside. Drowsiness for me wants large quantities of Japanese green tea, which you'd think most suitable for summer. I brew it sharp, a little bitter, when chilled, no idea why that seems the thing.
