July 3, 2013 TeaChat TAD enabled. Do you have it?

by Chip » Jul 3rd, '13, 11:48

Welcome everyone to another TeaDay on TeaChat. I truly hope everyone is enjoying their tea ... and TEAWARE! This time around we will be discussing Teaware.

Teaware Addiction Disorder otherwise known as TAD appears to be going viral here on TeaChat! This infectious addiction that causes such a state of euphoria that it is running rampant throughout TeaChat. Just look at our index, we have a forum entitled TeaWare and Accessories, which has numerous topics on Teawares where members are enabled to show off their teawares and their TAD. Members have openly admitted they have it. Here is a partial recent quote -
JRS22 wrote:... I know all this first hand because I've got TAD.

So, let us know, do you have a full-blown case or have you been impervious to this deliciously aggressive addiction?

Have fun this week sharing with us on TeaDay and enjoy your teawares ... and teas with us too! Bottoms up!

I have purchased 3 kyusu in half a year. I think that may count. Not even mentioning cups, etc.

Hm, I've bought a kyusu and four teacups in the past week! I keep promising myself that "this is the last one for a good while..."

I think the linchpin of TAD is how much you value the form of teaware, over and above the function. I.e., do you buy teaware that looks pretty, even though you have one already that does the same thing?

I said "Not really", although I may be in the early stage of TAD (aka denial)

This year I've purchased a chawan, a houhin, 2 yunomi, 1 kyusu and 1 serving pitcher. I'm also looking for a kyusu for my birthday (maybe another yunomi with it), a gaiwan and small shiboridashi.

My "justification" that I don't have TAD is that the vast majority of my teaware is fairly inexpensive, and I've only been purchasing items to fill gaps in size/function (or so I've been telling myself)

Well, since I've already spent more on tea and teaware than I projected for the entire year during an earlier poll this year, I would have to say I have it.

I easily spend 10-20x as much on rock climbing as I do on tea. I don't have any reason to make the same kind of investment towards tea. And when I do spend money on tea, it almost always goes towards tea instead of teaware. So no, no TAD here.

Definite TAD here. Teawares are relatively small, portable, and often entirely functional pieces of art. I've managed to find a lot of gaps in my collection big enough to fit this or that lovely piece I'm looking at....

Not really, I have a pretty limited tea budget, so I tend to spend on tea before teaware.

Can't drink a teapot

I would have to echo debunix reply--so far my TAD hasn't been too extreme (I think), but I do find myself looking at/buying new pieces every few months. As I get older, I find I value functional art more than I do decorative works that do nothing but collect dust, and teaware definitely fits that bill! That said, I am trying to make a conscious effort to redirect more of that part of my budget towards better tea ...

The first step is publicly admitting I have TAD (see Chip's post). The second step is accepting it's an asset - tea tastes better in a beautiful well-made pot. I can be flippant because I seem to be immune to the yixing strain of TAD. The third step is finding more space to store tea and teaware as I haven't purchased from all the artisans yet.

This does appear to be one of the most virulent strains, indeed.
