Sunday 8/03/08 Prefered region for Japanese green tea?

Quiet day here. After yesterday's festivities, it was nice to crash. Thanx for all the congrats, both public & private.

Didn't realize it til now but it's been a complete oolong day. W/bfast was Orange Blossom Oolong followed by Wuyi Shui Xian this afternoon. Chilling out now w/the Ali Shan High Mtn Golden Lily from TeaHome courtesy of the box pass. I understand why everyone was raving about this oolong! It's very light & refreshing. Hubby liked it, too. Still haven't decided if that's good or bad... since he likes it, means there's less for me. This tea is going on the "To Order" list!

I blame the Oooolongnians! But I blame them for gas prices too.

Speaking of Iron Goddess King, never got to it since I got home too late to start an oolong. But I did brew up some houjicha. Houjicha fails to excite me, but it beats no tea at all.

I don't argue that Kagoshima has some of the best (if not the best) sencha, but there's more to Japanese tea than sencha. Give me a Kagoshima matcha that impresses, and I'll change my vote.

Like Chip, drinking some houjicha, houji karigane.

Region was a tough choice for me. I've had some amazing shizuoka teas, but yame gyokuro still reigns supreme.

Life begins and ends with sencha! Good point actually. Gyokuro is also a good example.

I prefer houji karigane to houjicha I think.

The green teas I have had were are not marked with a specific point of origin - they were Gunpowder and Moroccan Mint - then, intrigued, I tried Matcha from Upton. Following a lead, I ordered and am waitng for Matcha Gen Mai cha Kamakura. (never thought I would be saying that), AND following all the leads and by the process of elimination I voted for Uji/Kyoto.

My brain has been invaded.

I was amazed how matcha was being heavily "pushed" at the Expo. I had more matcha in 3 days than in my entire life. But it was great having it made for you, often by Japanese. So, as the show would open each day, I found my way to the matcha samples.
