It's not that I don't trust Fair Trade or Organic certs, its more that I don't trust China, or the Chinese Government to be more precise.

I do buy Fair Trade coffee and other Fair Trade things from Whole Foods when I can though, I think the thought is nice. Also try to give a bit of $ to groups like Direct Relief International and such. Though yeah like you said, it doesn't mean that everything not labeled 'fair trade' is somehow 'unfair trade.' I think the overall message is mindfulness and awareness, and that can't hurt.

I might need kiddos to distract the sharks from my tea.

I completely agree that corruption in China is rampant and a serious problem, but it is important to note that China doesn't certify the product, FLO does. And they go out there every year. Other companies like Rishi and The Silver Tips Tea Room have a lot of direct contact with the Fair Trade Projects they source from.

Fair Trade ATOs and Later FLO were started and have grown do to the efforts of people in several countries who wanted to make a difference. Is it possible that FLO is in bed with China (next to the IOC), sure. I am not saying these people are above corruption. But if we can't put some faith in the people who are trying to help, then there isn't much hope for the world.

My response isn't directed specifically at you, Joel, but as a general rebuttal/answer to those who have the same concerns that you stated.

Tonight I'm drinking some Fair Trade Certified dian hong, and its yummy. :D

I did eat the Yame Gyokuro leaves this evening. I would not want to waste the "precious dew" leaves. They were quite tasty!

Still sipping the Wenshan Baozhong. Maybe the 6th steep currently and a few to go.

A difficult topic today was handled quite well, thus proving tea drinkers are civilized folks.

I have yet to try O-Cha's top of the line gyokuro. This is a glaring deficiency in my TeaResume. :(
FOR SHAME! What kind of o-cha plant are you?

Certainly not a Gokou varietal TeaPlant. Yutaka Midori or Saemidori TeaPlant more likely.

My church carries fair trade coffee and chocolate ( sometimes) - I will suggest tea to them this Sunday.
Your posts have been very interesting - we do " live at the expense of others" and I have taken a lot for granted.
