Re: Today's MatchaWan :D (new name, but tea's the same)
Always been very fond of chawan, but only recently been making matcha on a regular basis. My problem with chawan is that I (sadly) tend to have very expensive taste, and therefore can never afford the pieces I fall in love with. Finally fell in love with this beauty on Rikyu Cha, and it was actually quite inexpensive. Nice and light weight, and a great shape that makes it easy to whisk away like a demon! I really like the interplay between the dark clay and the lighter this glaze, but I can't remember what type of yaki it is. Any of the experts know?
Re: Today's MatchaWan :D (new name, but tea's the same)
Since this is a yunomi, it might belong over in the Pots/Cups thread, but I figured it would be more comfortable here. I bought this mino-yaki pice at the Japan Traditional Craft Center in Ikebukuro when I was in Tokyo. The artist is Katsumi Fukagawa, a.k.a. 'Deido', who is commissioned as the official potter of the Hoshigaoka Saryo restaurant in Japan. I could look at the glaze for hours and continue to keep finding new facets, shapes, and colors. When tea is added, a metallic gold sheen is brought out in certain places. I'm fully in love with this one!

Finally, here is a $10 shino-yaki chawan I bought in Asakusa. Depicted while in service at the Japanese garden at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens during sakura season a couple weeks ago!

Beautiful piece. When I go to Japan this fall, I will definitely spend more time in the ceramics area of the Traditional Craft Center. On my first trip, I just bought a wooden rice bowl....back before I knew of chawans or Hagi....tingjunkie wrote:Since this is a yunomi, it might belong over in the Pots/Cups thread, but I figured it would be more comfortable here. Thanks d. It's a really fantastic shop! I also bought a second (but more mass produced) yunomi there that I love, and a handmade folded steel kitchen knife. My shopping regret about being in Tokyo is that I knew absolutely nothing about Chinese teaware back then. I hear there are lots of Yixing pots to be found if you look.

Took a recent trip to Flagstaff AZ, to visit my old alma mater. While I was their I visited the ceramics department and met with a new acquaintance, Eugene Brosseau and my professor Jason Hess. They are both great woodfire artists.
This Chawan was made by EUGENE BROSSEAU.
He has this to say about it,
" large teabow sculpture impressed with objects from around ceramics studio and forest. Designed as solid object then hollowed to create vessel. Fired in "switchback kiln" or "double headed dragon", designed by Etsuji Nogouchi. Shino inner glaze otherwise bare clay, 36 hours near firebox front with better ash accumulation on back firebox side"
The clay body is a mix known as "Pioneer day"
I REALLY love this very tactile bowl, it has been a challenge to photograph, it is very photogenic, but has so much going on it is hard to capture all the details and represent them with my limited camera ability.
I call this bowl "Kazan-seki"
So without further ado, please enjoy...
with matcha
Dens organic matcha ready to drink
The face has a lot of specs of gold color that I could not pick up with my camera
The Foot!
