Wow that looks extremely nice and roomy enough to do everything. Also i think i see a lovely Seto tea caddy coupled with a deep kuro raku chawan (with the thick rim in the second photo).

If you don't mind me asking; where did you purchase or receive those tatami mats. And are they standard in size? Anyway, i love the layout. Looks very nice.

Blair is in Kyoto.

There are two sort of "standard" sizes..... one in the eastern part of Japan (Tokyo) and one in the western (Kyoto).

Tatami are easy to find in the USA...... where are you?

Good eye fuut, it is indeed a kuro raku bowl, and a seto chaire. Yes my room is surprisingly large, it's actually larger than the dorm room I shared with a roommate back in my college days.

Those are standard kyoto size tatami, one full mat and one half mat. I do temae on the full mat and the half mat is for my guest, that was in tonight's case a shared role by myself.

The mats were left behind by some previous students.

yes, when you carry the tea bowl into the room it would be too unstable otherwise, the tip is quite weighted and do the the physics of the shape it is very easy for it to flip over if carried in tip up. the more wabi the rim of the bowl the more challenging it would be.
