This was the first Yunomi of Ginkgo's that reached out and said "you need me." I have only one poor photo of that cup, featured in Ginkgo's topic.
I love hiking in California's Sierra Nevada mountains: the granite itself is beautiful, shiny, a sparkling kaleidoscope of color that merges to gray at the scale of a landscape photo. This cup reminds me of granite up close, sparkly with colorful inclusions and fine crystalline appearance, but unlike granite, it is softly rounded and feels wonderfully gentle in my hand. Today it was baptized with Den's Sencha Shin-ryoku and then helped with a tasting of Lao Ban Zhang this evening.
I did gain some new insight today into the value of handles, when I filled the green/white yunomi at the office with freshly infused Tie Guan Yin brewed at about 185 degrees. I had better results iwth the Lao Ban Zhang puerh this evening, despite infusing it hotter, by the simple expedient of not filling the cup. Easy to do with the small infusions of gong fu. No more burning fingers!
different side, different lighting, still beautiful
It is a bit larger than the other blue/green/white yunomi, probably large enough to serve as chawan for matcha, if and when I'm ready to try that again.
I will continue to enjoy some teas in my glass cups especially to enjoy the color of the tea, and the small matched cups for comparative tasting sessions, but expect these to be my best companions on many tea drinking adventures from now on.

That is a gorgeous cup! I love her pieces. All of them reach out and said "you need me" to me.

I was in the mood for Green Tea today, so I dug out my Gaiwan. It is a Blue and White Porcelain hand made in Jingdezhen. It is a larger Gaiwan and was intended to be drank directly out of. It holds 160ml.

I'm still wary of drinking straight from the gaiwan, but that's a lovely one to use as a cup.
Re: Newest Chapter! Show Off Your Pots and Cups XIII
Very nice debunix and IPT!! Love them both!
I use gaiwans as cups frequently.

Like the shapes, the simple design with the fish, and the historical interest too. Does the 'gaiwan' have any ridges or filter or just the pouring spout?
Re: Newest Chapter! Show Off Your Pots and Cups XIII
They are pretty. I have the same cups but don't have the gaiwan yet. I agree, the cups feel really good in hand. I use them for oolongs.Chip wrote:Super pieces Debunix and IPT! Thanks much for sharing them with us!

Yes, the wall of the actual gaiwan part is perforated quite nicely.debunix wrote:Like the shapes, the simple design with the fish, and the historical interest too. Does the 'gaiwan' have any ridges or filter or just the pouring spout?

Oh oh, it might be too late if you were going to get it from purepuer. They list the cups only.
Or did you see it elsewhere, if so, where?
Yeah, perfect for oolongs.

I've never seen a cuter, or less appetizing looking Yellow Tea.

Re: Newest Chapter! Show Off Your Pots and Cups XIII
I know this isn't technically a post about teapots or teacups, but it is about pottery objects which were an essential part of every teashop. I'm talking about the cuspidor. A lot of spitting goes on and these beautiful, albeit kinda icky utensils were important in keeping the floors clean. Well, cleaner. I guess it depends on the person's aim.
Anyhow, these are two Repulican period cuspidors. The blue and white porcelain one is dated Minguo 37 (1948). The Green one has no markings. I love its shape though. I won't ever use them for their intended purpose, but I have put them in strategic places in my tea room and could see using them as waste water containers, or to hold flowers or dried grasses. Even though they were designed for something not so pleasant, they are pretty.
What do you think?

Re: Newest Chapter! Show Off Your Pots and Cups XIII
Doubt I would have recognized them for their use.
I think they'd make lovely vases for fresh or dried flower or plant arrangements, although they're probably quite large compared to the usual fresh flower arrangements.

They are a bit large. I think I'll probably use them for dried grasses or something.
