Re: Ode to the Kyusu

:D :D

yup, the remaining ones you see available are others that had been made together with the ones i ordered :P when i experimented with the clay last year.. totally fell in love with it, the weight, density and feel is just right, heightens tea aromatics without robbing the body, thin walls, excellent handling.. what else could i ask for but attempt to convince Toru to put an order to hokujo to fulfil my size requests..? :P

had hoped that he could do 100ml-150ml, but it seems that the smallest one he had made so far is 160ml (which i own).. and i also got a 200ml mogake~. a year's wait is totally worth it :P most hokujo pots on the market are much larger.

Alex wrote: Damn you and that picture. Had to order one of the smaller ones. Love Hokujos work but rarely see direct filter sub 200ml pots from him. If you prompted the order from artistic Nippon then we'll done that man!

For those also tempted let me give a gentle push

-very thin walled
-Hokujo is a big tea drinker and it shows in his work
-fit and finish is as good as it gets.
-for me the pots are aesthetically the best in Japan.
-and lastly the opertunity to get a small size rarely comes up.

Thanks kyarazen

Some more info about the clay.

Yeah couldn't let it slip. Just hardly ever see small ones and Toru said he's in such demand he just takes what he can get.

Thanks again though! Ordered #5 although tbh I would be happy with any of them!

2# sold as well today....just two left people! Lol

Those are really nice looking, I just wish they were a little smaller!

All I know is... next time I see a Hokujo mogake shiboridashi, I'm jumping on it.

ok, well thanks to alex, i have found what i've been looking for :D

unfortunately i have no jp greens, so i decided to brew something a little different... first flush darjeeling. hey, it's green. if you squint, it looks just like gyokuro, right? 8)

it tastes really, really good brewed like this actually.

55mL. feels so nice to handle. that indented lid knob is very ergonomic.

Sweet! it will be quite worthy of any special green, not just gyokuro. Wouldn't a nice Tai Ping Hou Kui look neat in that flat bowl?

Better for gyokuro, imo.

Finally unwrapped this Gisui mogake kyusu I picked up almost half a year back. I know, I'm bad. The clay is of the rihi pear skin variety, so it is freckled throughout. It's smoother to the touch than expected. I really like the size at ~220ml. I filled only halfway for the first few brews and then fully for remaining resteeps. I was gladly surprised at the quick, forceful pour speed. The mogake gives this pot such character. In summary, it was an enjoyable first experience with the Gisui!

Man the forums seem real vacant. I've been lurking for a while and around 2015ish everyone seems to have disappeared.
Despite that, I can't help but post my babies here, one of which is a yunomi, not a kyusu, but oh well.
Since only three photos are allowed, this is my tokoname kyusu by Shoryu. It's what started my addiction. The rest of my collection to come!

My Jinpachi is my baby!!!! Toru is not kidding when he says that they need to be held to really be appreciated. The pour is like nothing else I've ever felt. The kyusu is light and feels like an extension of my hand. If it is at all possible, I highly recommend adding Jinpachi to your collection. I had to snag this one because it is made of bizen clay and Toru said someone was thinking of buying it. If the person who wanted it sees this I am sorry, but I really wanted it and had been working my butt off to save for it

A long, drawn out after taste is super important to me opposed to body and oh boy does this make the after taste last forever. It's fantastic. A sweet, delicious cup is always delivered. It's not as smooth or mellow as sencha or sincha I make in my tokoname, but that's fine. I find my tokoname gives more body opposed to enhanced after taste.

The tea is Ippodo's 2016 Sincha. It's a bit too grassy for me this year so I've been playing with the leaf/water ratio that works for me. That's why there isn't much in there.

Beautiful wares. Your Shoryu looks very much like mine in shape & clay, and I imagine is equally pleasing to use every time

I need cooler in-use photos to show how wonderful it really is...
