Didn't know about those as well until I saw some at a local tea store here in Switzerland. They're more common in taiwan. Most offers you can find at chinese online stores and ebay auctions. Those are really cheap (<100$) but not made of real jade (nephrite & jadeite). I guess most of them are just soapstone but still sold as "jade". In asia almost everything that looks like jade is called jade.

Fortunately the light is just for presentation purposes.. making tea does work very well without it.

Came back from a trip to Yingge... made my year! Bought far too much teaware than needed but then I matched it by buying far too much tea than what I could possible drink in this life time! That evens it out, doesn't it? lol.

I found this pretty celadon-colored tea bowl that had a silver goldfish inside which would, based on what I could glean with the little mandarin I know, turn golden if I kept drinking tea out of it.

Though it seems rather out of place since most of the bowls here seem to be Korean or Japanese... I thought I would just share

Wow, very pretty! I've seen bowls with fishes in the bottom before, by they were always ceramic, not silver.

I'm trying to figure out how use would permit the fish to become golden without the celadon becoming unpleasantly stained, especially around the fish. The idea is very cool, but how does a well-used cup like this actually look?

The first night I got it back home, I was soooooo excited to get it to change color that I soaked it overnight in a strong pu-erh solution. I was hoping to get it to turn a rosy-golden color. The next day, however, when I poured out the pu-erh it didn't even change a bit so I suspect it has less to do with staining and more to do with oxidation. The shop that sold it to me did show me a used one and only the fish turned golden while the porcelain stayed pristine. So I guess I just have to be Zen about it and let nature take it's course... speaking of which that reminds me of a trivet with koi carvings that was also supposed to change color, where did I put that thing... oops, sorry I digress.

Anywhosit, after each use I rinse the cup thoroughly and pat it dry so that the porcelain doesn't stain nor does it accumulate mineral residue around the fish. If doing this means that the fish won't turn golden then that's fine. I'd rather have a silver fish in a nice bowl then a golden fish in a mucky one

I was originally struggling with the decision to buy it cause it was a quite a bit more than what I was prepared to spend but I'm definitely glad I bought it! My friends told me I couldn't stop smiling that day after I got it... like a monkey with a shiny toy.
