Here's a new addition to my teaware family!!!
Little gaiwan I scored from a new little Chinese shop in Sydney from a man who couldn't speak English, had to write the price in my hand! (only $15!!)

About 115ml, extremely thin, thinner than the other 2 eggshell gaiwans I have! light shines through it like a charm! Love it!!!

Camera was flat so you'll have to endure the smartphone pics, sorry!

Well, having not purchased new teaware for myself since 2010, I made up for it ( ) by finally going for some Kazuwa red:

It's not in my hands yet, but I am SO. EXCITED.

Long time no teachat...

I got this chaozhou stove. Tried the kettle on an electric plate and it really improves the taste of my puerh. It makes it sweeter and enhances the flavour and the aftertaste.

The kettle is so porous that when I keep water in it for some time, the water exudes out from the bottom. Would you recommend to wash it with the corn starch method? Would this affect its effect on water?

I do not know anything for a fact, but I would hesitate given that this will expose the absorbed cornstarch to much higher temps than say a Hagi teacup.

You got a good thing going, not worth the risk IMHO.

And welcome back!

Thanks for your advice and welcome, Chip. I'm of the same opinion but let's see what other teachatters think. I remember someone cooking rice in a Lins ceramic kettle, but can't remember why.

Yalokinh, there's this Czech guy selling tea and teaware from Yunnan on his website called chawang shop. He's very knowleadgeable and kind. The kettle and stove set comes in different combinations, I thought I'd go for it as it's rather difficult to come across this kind of stuff in Europe.

Usually, when kettles leak, they are not fired properly. Temp was too low or in a part of the kiln that didn't get sufficient heat. If it were me, I would return it. But, if you are happy with it and can live with the leaking problem, and are sure about the quality of the clay, then it is up to your better judgement. Happy drinking.

I would totally not return a kettle only because it leaks a bit when you leave the water for a long time (mine does exactly the same) - the high porousness is the point of the Chaozhou kettles - that is precisely why they are so good. When I compared a tetsubin with glazed kettle and porous Chaozhou kettle, the Chaozhou kettle was an absolute winner.

I.e., it's a feature, not a bug :)

Good luck with your stove/kettle. I think it's the cheapest way of upgrading your tea experience you can buy.

edit: I think it's suggested to soak the whole kettle in water about an hour before boiling the water... probably should prevent cracking. Maybe the leaking will be less of an issue too.

A clay can be porous without it leaking. But, as I said, if the user is not bothered by this, then there is no problem.
