The Melon Yixing Pot discussion

by In search of truth » Aug 7th, '11, 15:15

I believe this is called a Melon Teaopt.

It feels smooth and to me is wonderfully crafted.

There are leaves in the botton of the pot

It looks nice, - - after you mentioned her name, I checked out some of her work and found it a bit garish and ostentatious for my taste. But this one looks comfortable :D and exquisitely made :) . Though it is perhaps too large for many tea chatters  What size is it?

Have you decide what to use it for?

7cm tall, sits nicely in the hand but resides in a cabinet until it is identified as genuine or not.

Alternatively,we can use my Whieldon Punchpot (Circa 1750 and 24.3cm tall) and brew up a weeks supply.

It is 38cm handle to spout.
Manganese and copper oxide splashed onto refined earthenware was then covered with a clear lead glaze.

You can see how sloppily this one was glazed, probably late afternoon in a rush to finish.

I resized the image but only half appears to have come out;any ideas ?

Well, I dont think we need the actual price... I am not asking for that anyway.
Just a around: $100 US? $1000 US? $10K or $100k?

Tim,I'm not at liberty to divulge but it was not a great deal.Under £500.

What is your view of the teapot ? Perhaps more pictures tomorrow to help evaluation of its possible genuineness or otherwise ?

Sorry to butt in on the discussion here, but I'll go ahead and ask the obvious hanging question -- do you make this assessment because of the price range, or because of something in the photos about the pot, or some other factor...?

If the pot was a genuine 蒋蓉 (Jiang Rong) the price would indeed be way too low, however prices don't really help much as one can get lucky too sometimes and buy from someone who doesn't really know what they have. Anyways, the leaf doesn't look alive and is too heavy, rather crude lines too, that was not her style. Even most Jiang Rong copies, or should I say homages, do look different.

I am fortunate to own an original Jiang Rong Pot and Nico is correct. Her leaves were delicate and lifelike. Her lines were very refined. It is one of the reasons she was so respected.

If a master flower pot has an unbalance proportion body like the one in question. It will not be from her.
