Not my teaware.....but I wish it were....

by debunix » Aug 20th, '11, 02:59

A topic for things you spotted on the web or elsewhere, that are not yours, but you still would like to share.

I'll start with a bowl I saw today, on Magokorodo's e-bay site. They're not my pics so I can just post a link to the listing of this astonishing piece:

Just.....wow.

... not that expensive, but still I don't drink nearly enough matcha to justify such a purchase.

I love those oilspot chawan! I've seen several similar-looking pieces at Korean tea fairs, and they're all expensive too, but thankfully not as expensive as that piece! Let's just say that I may own a Korean version someday when I've got an extra $300-$400 lying around.

Odd I thought we had a topic like this before but I can not seem to find it. But mine would be a Yunomi by Kaneta Masanao. (Sorry I do not have photos).

I saw this one a while back... I don't know who made it, but I would love to have it!

Maybe I'm cheating, but for the price alone... http://www.artinfo.com/news/story/34957 ... 2-million/

I'd quickly sell it, give a big chunk of cash to my mom, and retire to Tahiti or some such tropical place where I could live like a king. Then again, maybe I'd be better off with one of Sen No Rikyu's original chawans. Those might fetch more then $2M.

I like this topic--it's really neat seeing the teaware that other people lust after ...

So for my part, I thought I'd post pictures of the kyusu that got away. This was from a 'Best Offer' Ebay auction--the original asking price was about 250 pounds, I believe, which translated into over $300 USD at the time. To this day I've never paid anything near that for a tea set, but in retrospect, I wish I'd just paid the original asking price--I've never seen a kyusu since that had this kind of beautiful, delicate brushwork and ornamentation.

For a series of close-up shots, you can go here to see what I'm talking about: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/8 ... directlink The patterns and images are so amazingly detailed, it's almost like looking at a storybook.

Sadly, once a couple of offers were made, the owner pulled the listing. Apparently she had been told the set was more valuable than what she'd listed it for, and had decided to hold on to it a bit longer. I couldn't blame her for that--but boy do I ever wish it hadn't gotten away! :)

Suzuki is a great potter. The prices are not unreasonable, I think. But, the strong Yen doesn't help.

Uh-oh. I misread those zeros. These are way more than I originally thought. Hmm.

[Not a 'wish it were mine', not really]

And one more oddity noted while doing a fun browse on Ebay this evening: searching by price, displaying high to low, on various teaware terms, the search for 'tea cup' revealed this to be the priciest of all at $100,000 asking price:

McDonald's tea cup!
