I had posted this in show off you pots and cups, but this seems a far better place for it.

Oni Arare Tetsubin with fukuro tsuru by Kunzan

Holds 1.8 liters, 60.8 ounces. This is where all my tea begins, HOT WATER, I have upgraded from a smaller tetsubin to this one and I am ever so glad I did. This kettle really is a piece of art, I love the sound it makes when it is heating on the burner, and yes you can really taste a difference in the water. Does it make tea taste better? Well it certainly brings out some more character and adds and great emphasis to the finish. plus the water stays hot for a LONG time.

great attention to detail, this is true craftsmanship!

Here you cans see the mushi kui or "bug bite marks" this is a special feature for kettles with hollow handles.

and of course it has picked up the initial rust, it is too early for scale to have developed.

One other comment about the Dremel thing: when a kitchen utensil meets a garage gadget, it's time to go back to stainless steel, or worse, plastic, for boiling your water. I mean, where is the zen?

As long as it gets it rehabbed I could care less what touches it.

How about using a dremel to make tea tools? Is that non-zen?

BH, could we get an "after" photo? Dermal sounds like a good idea to me.

Here is a picture of where things stand with my tetsubin. I applied vinegar per Jay's recommendation.

Sorry for the blurry iPad photos.

Wow, that amazing. How long did that take with the dremel?

Looks like Econ could also use a Dremel and some vinegar!?
Nice scale building up! How has tea-life been post-tetsubin?

Off topic...
Hang onto that lid!
About 6 weels ago, my lid fell off while pouring the last bit. I had to hang onto it for a few seconds longer to avoid dropping it on my teaware. The steam burnt two of my fingers bad enough to raise huge blisters. For one hour it was incredibly painful.

I was under the impression a little rust in a tetsubin is pretty normal. So what's with all the vinegar and dremeling.
I wish I had a tetsubin to show off. Unfortunately my Lin's kettle hit the floor a couple months back. I am right now stuck with my water boiler.

Nice scale build up Econ lookin good.

I'm probably going to live with the rust for now, hopefully the scale covers it all up and it will stop rusting :D

Frightened of what vinegar would do to my lovely build up.

Hi, GN!
Sorry to hear about your kettle!

We were mainly bantering about keeping rust off the area where the lid meets the kettle. I tried the q-tip and vinegar suggestion. It did help with no side-effects.

My kettle had built up more rust than seemed healthy for the long run. After two years the scale is getting lumpy. Looking forward to more!

Hi,

The rust in the cast iron kettle can be resolved by boiling some tea in it.

Thanks for the tip!

I tried rubbing the rim with tea leaves. It worked okay. There were some leaf bits that made their way in and took some time to clear out. Doing on some exterior areas worked quite well.

The rust on the interior is not a bit concern. With the heat and evaporation there is not a lot of contact going on (I know you know this, but for general info.)
