Yup, it's a copper chataku, courtesy of Teaswap. I was being rather eclectic in my teaware choices--I had a Korean teapot and server out, a Chinese teacup and tea tray, and a Japanese saucer. Yay multicultural teaware. :D

My new tenmoku and iron red gaiwan from Shawn McGuire arrived yesterday--the long-awaited companion to my lovely cups.

These are very tough to photograph, with the glossy black glaze, but I think you can see how well they work together.

They're gorgeous! I love the beautiful deep rich colour. (They look like they'd be a pleasure to drink from, too ;-) )

The cups have been a pleasure from day one, only pining a little for some worthy tea brewing vessel, and now they have one!

Evening tea snapshots ...

Enjoying a 2012 Shi Feng Dragonwell from Verdant Tea ... even a year later, it still has an amazing taste. And I decided to use some antique ware that doesn't nearly get enough attention--I thought the contrast against Petr's pot was really nice, and it showed off the tea as well.

hopeofdawn, I love that combination! The older cup is very beautiful especially with the other elements. I don't often think about my cup as much... I tend to be teapot-focused. Your table is like a beautiful arrangement of flowers! Everything is considered.

You know, I often see things I like on these threads and don't bother to comment. I think I'm going to try and change that -- I love all of the photos people post-- it gives me so many ideas and it's just fun to see how others enjoy tea!

This is my first time drinking sencha, since my greenwood studios gaiwan came on the same day as my Ipodo matcha, gokujo genmaicha and sencha and since it is so... green... I decided that they ought to go together.

I think it's a perfect. Look at how those greens amplify each other!

I like this gaiwan, it's almost like a teapot with all of its smart features, there is a lip to hold the lid on, grooves to help strain the tea and it pours nicely. I may need a larger version for more drinking the 40ml is perfect for a new tea that you aren't certain you'll like.

It's the perfect gaiwan for people who hate them. (that would be me!)

That's what I'm drinking (not the whole bag, I have enough left to do a bigger session in a 150ml pot later. Probably tomorrow so it won't go stale. )

It's my first sencha so... I don't know how to evaluate it except that it was sweet and very caffeinated and I liked it a lot-- I loved the color too!

Today is a day for green things!

I'm an idiot (well really I just don't know much about Japanese tea... yet) but that's not a "strange giawan" it's either a shiboridashi or a Hobin.

I'm going to call it a "smart giawan"

I believe that the spout and the 'rake' filter distinguish your shib from a gaiwan. Shawn does talk about using the shib like a gaiwan. I can see that, but the reverse is probably not true i.e. the shib will work well for both Chinese and Japanese greens but a gaiwan using doesn't work that well for Japanese greens. The gaiwan won't catch enough tiny and broken leaves, at least not for me. I recently got a gaiwan and cup set from Shawn which is my favorite way to brew a session of jasmine silver needles. The gaiwan handles beautifully and will see more varied use when my 2013 Chinese greens arrive.
