Would this design work well?

by toasterburn » Nov 11th, '13, 15:00

I've been looking online the last few days for a gaiwan and I haven't found any so far that I like aesthetically. Then I happened upon a local potter that does custom work and thought about having her make me one. But if I'm getting one custom made, I want to make sure I get it just right.

So I'm thinking about having this made: It would be a gaiwan style, but 8 0z so I could brew a full cup of tea if I choose. I'm also considering getting a filter built in the top like in the image below to help keep the leaves out when pouring.

So would this design work well? Any suggestions?

I don't see any problems with it, it should work just fine

Looks functional. The primary limitation with this sort of hybrid design is whether your fingers get scorched or not when you are pouring--if the little ears keep your fingers far enough from the body of the cup, and insulating enough, it's great.

also, you cannot pour too fast or else you will get liquid spilling out of the top. You might not think that this will be a problem until the day you are trying to do too many things at once and then you spill hot tea and tea leaves all over.

It sounds like it would no longer be a gaiwan and would be more like a hohin at that point.

I didn't even know what a hohin was until I just googled it, but yes that's the sort of thing I have in mind.

Who makes a nice hohin? I've been goggling for a while and can't seem to find anything except pictures.

You can also look up alternative spellings such as Houbin, Houhin, Hobin ...

Some of our Teaware Artisans make them including Petr, Andrzej, Shawn.

You can also look on Japanese sites such as artisticnippon.com, zencha.net, o-cha.com and ebay. They might be Hagi, Bizen, Shigaraki to name a few.

Rishi sells a hohin; thinking about getting it myself.
