Thanks Cheryl, I just got one like that yesterday too. I had one before, I was very fond of it. It feels so good in the hand.

I love all these photos. Hagiyaki is very sensual!

For those who enjoy drooling:

Quick little video of a hagi potter making a cup:

And another one - a bit longer. Nice soundtrack!

It does feel very good! My dog came woke up and asked to go out just as I was starting my morning cup. I wrapped my hagi in some towels and when I came back my tea was still warm :)

Hagi-ware origins are Korean; the artisans were abducted with the intent of developing pottery craft absent before then (beginning of Zen Buddhist practice) in Feudal Japan.

It's clearly an evolved and deeply appreciated artform in Japan, but at its' most deconstructed form, it's also an acquired taste.

It seems to me having a Hagi piece in hand would
change a lot of tea drinker's minds.

I agree, I bought my first piece because the curiosity was driving me nutz. When I opened the box, I said out loud: "Ohhhh!" The pictures cannot really convey what "it" is about Hagi. It just feels different from almost any other pottery I have. The closest in my personal collection is a thick-glaze shino bowl which resembles the glaze on some of Yamane Seigan's pieces.

I have a nice little guinomi on the way. The feet make it so adorable.

Absolutely - there is something very pleasant in the dense-yet-light, rough-yet-smooth quality they have in the hand. Impossible to convey in pictures. A lot of great pottery is that way - you have to hold it to get the full story.

This takes me way back... something from the seventies, I think? Oh yeah:

(I joke, but I love. The guinomi AND its foot are adorable!)

Hee hee, when I first saw the feet, I thought it was a molasses cookie cut into fourths. I think I need new glasses! Or some cookies.

I would say even 6 months ago, I thought Hagi was generally hideous, but I was bit by the Hagi bug and there is likely no turning back.

Most people try to find the perfect teapot for their favorite tea but I love looking for the perfect cup. I've been eyeing this cup for awhile. Since the government finally gave me my tax refund and I'm a thousandaire lol I decided to treat myself to this cup. I will be using it for my new favorite Quangzhou Milk Oolong. The glaze on the cup reminds me of a iced oatmeal cookie I just wanna lick it. I'll try not to once I get it. lol
I ♥ TEA!
