I can't imagine... but I was surprised that the seller believed it to be saleable. It's one thing to have a chip on the rim or the foot ring, but a chunk out of the base? Makes it just a tad challenging to drink from :wink:

Perhaps if it was the last chawan on earth, I might consider. But really, $9.99 plus shipping from Japan. Let's just say I am not impressed with this seller.

Beautiful, Cory. Reminds me of the red of the Kazuwa glazes, although a little darker, but with great depth.

Nice thread you guys have going here. Some tragedy, some glory, some beauty, some squalor. Everything you need to make a soap opera ... plus chawan!

My favorite of the two I own is the simplest and cheapest:

I got another because I love black against green, but the chawan itself just doesn't do it for me. The surface texture just reminds me too much of plastic.

Of course, like everyone, I crave all of Cory's, some of which I gather are for sale but I assume that if the prices correspond even roughly to the workmanship that they are beyond my budget.

Cory, that deep red glaze is beautiful...having you on the teachat is another real treat !
Sal, your white bowl is simply wonderful...that shape is my favorite shape and the simple white "crackled" glaze must really show off the matcha. The black is pretty, but I know that if it doesn't feel right you won't get maximum enjoyment from that bowl.

i'll post tomorrow. i'm having beers relaxing now.

they are double walled porcelain pieces

Ok, this bowl isn't my favorite, but it is my favorite non-hagi chawan (the hagi one is pirctured on the hagi thread). Actually right now it is my only other chawan.

This bowl has lots to look at, so here are 4 pictures of the outside and one of the writing on the inside. It is tough to see in the pictures, but there is gold paint on the rim and in other areas as accent (long red leaves and the "eyeballs").

Does this represent land???

This one looks like eyes with gold pupils...

A bird flying over the sun..

A flower.

Here's what's written on the inside bottom (sorry for the flash glare!)
(I'm guessing it says "matcha all gone, time to make more").

Mmmmm, now I want a bowl of matcha...

had dinner w/ some ceramic meisters tonite. i shared about the 'makers' section that will open soon here ! my friends, amazing dogu folks were happy to join later. they aren't as tech savy, so i might have to assist them getting on to the teachat place.

todays firing went ok ! i was finished by 2pm. nice ! we'll see. proof is in the pudding. monday unload. i'll post some pics here !

Dreamer, I like the earthy colors on yours. It's funny that those flowers looked like eyeballs to me too!

I think I need to start drinking matcha!
