Thanks debunix. One of the reasons that I built a noborigama kiln in the first place was the ability to have some great varaiation in the pieces from a single firing. All have a core materiality sensibility that is certainly shared, but each is expressed in a slightly different way.

Thanks Dave.

Yeah... some of that above work is "American Shino".... not to be confused with Japanese Shino  Been using that same shino for a long time now; finally have it pretty well in hand. My recipe was published in the book/CD that came with the Malcolm Davis' Shino Invitational exhibition I had a piece in which was held at NCECA in Baltimore a few years back. Uses a blend of different particle sizes of Nepheline Syenite as the base of the mix.

I've been using the same pallate of about 9 glazes for about 30+ years. Just starting to really get a handle on them.

Testing a new glaze in the past three or four firings...... but still not getting what I want out of it. When it is good... it is STUNNING....... but it is still too erratic and I don;t understand what it really needs to get the precise effect I want.

best,

Thanks IPT.

The form and the Gamakimisama met nicely on that piece.

John,

It's really nice to see your work. I actually did one of your wood-fired workshops back in 1997 with my best pal from Massart. I still have some of the pots kicking around..

I'm super impressed to see you pulling those Oribe styled bowls from the side of your kiln like that. Talk about Earth and fire!! Do you have any images of the completed works?

Regards,

John

These two wood fired American style cups will be among the 10 cups that I will have available there. I will be joining about 150 other artists who have been involved with the International Program at Kanayama in this fund raising effort. If you are in the northeast of Japan, please stop by this exhibition and pick up a piece of work.

This solo exhibition of wood fired glazed and yakishime work made at John's studio in Wilton, New Hampshire will include kabin, hanaire, sara, wan, yunomi, guinomi, chawan, futaoki, mizusashi, and chaire.

This exhibition was scheduled far in advance of the earthquake and tsunami. Given that event, John has decided to donate the entire proceeds of this exhibition to the relief work being done in the northeastern part of Japan.
