Mike Martino, Karatsu ware from Taku, Japan: Self Intro

by karatsupots » Jan 18th, '15, 23:11

Hello everyone,
I've been a member of TeaChat for several years, but have only been able to login recently (due to my computer environment problem, or just plain stupid user syndrome, I don't know which).

So anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself to this forum, and am looking forward to participating!

Here are a couple of pieces from last fall's firing:

Hello debunix, Petr, John,

Likewise, very nice to make your acquaintances!

John, looks like you were pretty busy with that kiln building a while back. How did it all turn out (for you and the kiln). When I built my kiln, I had wrist pain for months afterward. Too many bricks to wrangle...

Mike

Mike,

The kiln structure came out fantastic. The students did a wonderful job.

Yeah... lots of bricks. I made up a 'fun" bumper sticker that I gave them about 3/4 of the way thru the build:

The students did most of the building work. So my hands and arms were OK. They took ibuprofen  .

The first firing was fantastic. WAY better than any of us could have hoped for. Kiln performed as I wanted, and the fired results were way above what we ever expected. (I THINK I poste a few of mine in my thread here.) Bodes well for the future. Even if the results got no better...... we'd be ecstatic.

On another note...... I designed this kiln to be both smokeless and flameless at the chimney. It worked. First smokeless anagama anywhere that I know of. Basic combustion theory...... focus on air handling capacity and mixing. With a little stoking management thrown in.

best,

.....................john

Hi Mike,
your great katakuchi is still in use in my kitchen (even not for sake in a truth). Nice to see you here too (world is so small).

John, I just saw your post up on facebook. Kilns always look better a little black.
Glad you were able to avoid much of the grunt work! Would love to hear about how you made the thing smokeless. Only one of those around here, and it has a complex re-burning system at the base of the chimney. Most people can't afford that, but Nakazato clan can.

Andrzej, glad to hear that it is serving you well!

Mike

Hi Mike. There was mention of your Etsy store. Could you provide a link to it? I'm sure there are people here who would like to look through your wares there!
