Just had a chance to view this thread- I am stunned and in awe over the beauty of your work and pieces!!!

love the shell ideas and the organic earthy feel and tones- and the orange too and thank you for sharing the pic that was the inspiration for one of your chawans

yy, its a double walled spout. it was thrown as double wall then placed on the piece when it was a bit drier, not that dry.

i have a small handmade tool, looks like a tiny `throwing stick`. i shape it like a tiny vase. the biggest challenge is to get the right angle of bend and have the spout pour without dripping.

at the moment i am intrigued by double walled vessels. fun to throw and challenging.

the porcelain double walled pieces are so great. your hands don`t get burned.

i can`t wait to make some double walled yunomi for tea. the biggest challenge of drinking great shincha and sencha is holding the yunomi... hehe ! hot hot hot !

What are the benefits of wood firing and how do you choose which things get wood fired?

aloha ! you are very welcome !

well... long story short, woodfiring is the ultimate in firing. u dont have any control over any coloration. its total serendipity ! chance rules.

the `keshiki` or different kiln effects in a wood fired kiln are amazing ! also takes more time and of course wood as fuel.

the wood fired pieces have a total different look. a total different appreciation. those sake cups (guinomi) took roger bauman 4 days to fire and countless hours of loading and unloading... intensive 1

hay Cory,
i just wanted to call to you attention the 1st pic on your thread.
it is a nice one but ....well...... how do i say this i had a weird dream last night about sponge bob sq p. and there was a crab in it. and it had these eyes that it keep turning toward me ........ so the big deal is the little knobby on the cup looks like one of the crab eyes.

just thought i would pass this on. :oops:

great question

personally i like a lot of texture like natural stone, rock formations. so i have special bladed tools that i use to facet the surface and also altering the forms to create assymetric forms that would be complimented by the wood firing.

secondly, a bit of iron in the clay causes the flashing on the surface. so having a clay with iron and no sand. in wood firing the sand rises to the clay surface and the pieces become rough.

there are many concerns when firing with wood. one big factor is the cost and time involved with wood firing. another is the cost of building a woodfire kiln too.
