Lots of cool stuff to look through but the very first page had me looking askance. The taxonomy listed [courtesy of Nguyen Ngoc Kinh (1979)] seemed weird, and this seemed quite the unsubstantiated bombshell:

Djemukhatze (1976) did a survey on wild tea plants in a number of places in Viet Nam (Ha
Giang, Nghia Lo, Lao Cai, and Tam Dao) and based on the biochemical evolution of the tea,
he concluded that the tea was originates from Viet Nam.

I guess everyone has a right to their own ethnocentric bias....

Probably somewhat true Evan, although the Camilla sinensis plants don't know of national boarders. Even though some considered the origin of the plant to be Yunnan Province, in southwestern China, Vietnam, Laos and Burma all abut the region with dense tropical forests and all have similar wild tea trees. I suspect the 'origin' nomenclature comes more from cultural history since China evolved the use and making of tea into a fine art very early on.

Indeed, I'm saying this report makes a pretty bold statement to say that all tea comes from Vietnam (if that's what it indeed is saying) without more support or qualifications, though I don't rule out that it's possible. But this is a technical agricultural paper, and phylogeny isn't their focus, so we oughtn't quibble.
