I'm thinking about taking a trip to Hong Kong. Any general advice on where to stay/what to eat and of course, where to go for tea?

Hi asterix,

Try contacting TC members MarshalN and jayinhk, both of whom live in HK. There may be others on this forum as well. HK is an enormous city, so I'm sure you'll find plenty of good places regardless of who you ask.

It all depends on what you're looking for and your budget--hotels here aren't cheap nowadays, but no matter where you stay, everything is readily accessible by public transportation and/or taxis!

I was hoping to do a five day trip for me and my partner and keep it under $3000. Looks like airfare will be around $1800 for us on air china. I want to eat healthy but somewhat cheaply if possible. Also am considering trying airbnb for lodging - maybe then I can cook my own meals sometimes. Don't need to rent a car as I hear public transport is great. We want to do hiking, swimming, swimming at beaches, check out various attractions and night life, and visit great tea houses. Maybe bring some tea home with me!!

For housing, try guest houses, as long as you don't mind a fairly small space. We had pretty good luck with Sealand House (http://www.sealandhouse.com.hk/ ; http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review ... _Kong.html), in Tsim Sha Tsui. Lots of other guest houses with reasonable rates reviewed on Trip Advisor.

To save money on food, eat at local eateries. Anything 'western' is going to cost more. Eating local is the way to get the best bang for your buck IMO.

As for driving in HK...not advisable, it will cost you a bomb, gas is four times as expensive here and traffic can be a problem...public transport often works out as fast or faster than driving! Streetside parking is almost non-existent too.
