Does anybody know when I should start looking for this spring's harvest to start arriving? This is the first year I'm going to buy some shincha; I think I'm going to get two or three hundred grams of sencha from either o-cha or zencha.

Around end of april, beginning of may it will be ready. But pre order can start much earlier.

Thanks Xell! I don't know how different the first flush harvest times for Japan and China are. I think Japan may be slightly later (wild guess)?? Do you know if O-cha and Zencha do pre-orders?

This year, I am not rushing into anything. First arrived may not be the best. I will also try to focus on organic crops.

Don't know, but i guess all japanese tea vendors will have at least something for pre order. Especially the 88 nights shincha. This year i'll increase my personal stock of 88 nights shincha, last year was also my first time trying it. Regret didn't get more :)

Local teashop owner with who i'm working with also gave me a tip, how to enjoy fresh shincha more. Preheat kyusu, put leaves inside, let leaves warm up, shake a bit and open lid little bit, try to smell air inside kyusu. The smell is godly

+1, it is a "must ... sit ... down ... " moment kind of thing!

It is addicting, and I do it actually for all sencha and gyokuro and matcha and ........

I know O-Cha does, and I am 99% certain Zencha does as well. You can write Zencha and ask.

I do this with almost every tea that I drink. It's my favorite part of drinking green teas.

I'm taking a laid back approach to Shincha this year.
I'm probably just going to order some of Tsuen's Kirameki from O-Cha as I remember enjoying it a lot last year. I might be tempted if there was a promising new organic as well.

I'm not going to bother with shincha versions of teas that are otherwise available later in the year. I have learned to appreciate the storage and packaging that is used with Japanese green tea from good vendors. The teas barely lose freshness, even after a year of storage. So if I'm going to buy shincha, I'll buy teas that are only available in that form for a limited time during the shincha period.
This may be due to me having a relatively full TeaFridge at the moment, though.

That doesn't mean I'm not excited to see what the 2012 harvest will bring.
Has the weather been favorable during tea growing season in the tea growing regions of Japan?

I'm really stoked about this year. Last year wasn't as much of a disappointment because I was more concerned with my friends and their families. Yes, 2011 tea wasn't that great, but so what? There are more important things than the tea (the people and their friends, families, and overall wellbeing).

politics aside, I'm ready for some good shincha.

Take care, teafriends.

My favorite, Sugimoto, started the preorder of 2012 shincha. I really love Sugimoto's shincha, especially temomi shincha. Have anyone else tried Sugimoto sincha before?

I also ordered one of O-Cha's shincha. I love O-Cha as well.

I too grabbed a few o-cha items and tossed in the yummy sakura sencha to share with friends.

Got the Tsuen Uji Sencha "Aoi" and the Kagoshima Sencha Yutaka Midori. Noms.
