Hi i am a fairly new green tea drinker and wanted to ask the veterans what they think about Ten Ren High Mountain Green Tea and Shi Hu Dragon Well green tea. I purchased some of their green tea and they were quite expensive and wanted to know what other's felt about this green tea. I'll admit i do like the tea, but i am courious if it has the same health benefits as other green teas. Any information would be great and any recommendations on green tea would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Too expensive ... poor value. However often the tea comes in cool canisters that can hold the same unused tea for a decade or more.

Welcome to the forum!

I've been drinking the Ten Ren High Mountain or the Dragon Well. I am not picky, just want to be pointed in the right direction, please. Just want a green tea that has high levels of antioxidants ect...i research the green tea online and there are thousands to choose from...

Well, it appears you like Chinese greens, while I prefer Japanese Greens.

I would urge any serious beginner to stray away from Ten Ren, as far as possible. Aside from the horrendous cost-efficiency, I cannot say how much of their "Taiwan High Mountain" is actually from Taiwan, it seems to be a common practice today for tea shops in Taiwan to order large amount of teas from South Eastern Asia, and mix them with some Taiwan tea. I don't know if Ten Ren does this, but on a personal level, I wouldn't drink Ten Ren even if it was free.

I seriously doubt Ten Ren is doing that. They have enormous contracts with people all the way down the productions line in Taiwan and in China. Also, Ten Ren has some some pretty good teas at pretty good prices. You could do much worse at least. I also wonder if you have ever had tea from Ten Ren.

And to answer the OP, isn't the best place for green tea. Thought I have had a good, but very overpriced one from them.

Well, it's good news that they're not doing that. But god knows what the production line is doing in China, eh? :P
There are tea shops in Taiwan that buy high mountain tea from China, and there are tea shops in China that are buying from Vietnam / Thailand, etc. But as I have no proof, I will go ahead and not say anything else on the subject.

Now as for tea from Ten Ren, yes, I've tried them before. And for me, even the tea that goes over $100 is undrinkable. I simply can't stand it. I'm sure there are some good tea, but at what cost? Sure you can do much worse, but you can also do much better.

We have a Ten Ren shop nearby, and I've always been impressed by the outstanding leaf quality and freshness of the tea. Continual tastings, exceptional variety. The tea is sourced in Taiwan and China primarily.

But as other tasters have said, it's a poor value. Recently, an OTTI was done on Mountain Tea - which is uniformly more interesting and enjoyable than most Ten Ren.

On a humorous note, they do have some cheap puerh.

Thanks everyone for the input on this subject, greatly appreciated. I'll take the advice that was given and stay away. I do think i'll try and finish the green tea that i purchased since i did spend a good amount of $ on it. Maybe i'll send some to some good friends...:):)..:)

Thanks again for the advice,

I think in Taiwan there is a supermarket version of Ten Ren and a boutique version of Ten Ren, in terms of lines of products. But in Canada, I did see supermarket version of Ten Ren sold for boutique version prices. If the two versions are priced accordingly, I think Ten Ren is an ok source for tea.

The Ten Ren green tea I saw in Canada are labeled as produced in Taiwan. In Ten Fu in mainland China (the daughter company of Ten Ren), some of their Taiwan oolong products are labeled as produced in Fujian. Ten Fu in mainland China also sells some green tea of the highest grades. You will surely be overcharged there, compared with some other sources, but it's still better than paying a lot in tourism stores for poor quality.
