Gyokuro in bulk?
Hi everyone! I have been loving Gyokuro late and want to stock up with a half lb or so. Does anyone know the best place online to get the best bang for your buck? I realize that Gyokuro is fairly expensive tea so any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Wellll ... what price point are you looking for? Gyokuro price and quality varies wildly.
And often lower end versions (from unknowing, unspecialized vendors to unknowing and unspecialized buyers) are not truly Gyokuro but are Kabusecha ... so do not simply buy cheap.

100 USD per pound is very low end. If I got a pound of that, I would very likely regret the purchase for many moons.
You are talking about buying around 1/2 pound which is really not bulk ... relatively speaking as this is only a little over 2 100 gram bags.
Therefore I would suggest some sites specializing in quality Japanese teas who will offer authentic Gyokuro. These sites offer some relatively inexpensive Gyokuro priced for daily consumption, though I personally would prefer to spend more per gram and get a "special" Gyokuro worthy of special times a few times a week.

A good suggestion. I was excited about falling in love with a tea but the price for quality makes it difficult to have as an all day drinker. Ill be trying out some other styles to find my daily cup.Chip wrote:100 USD per pound is very low end. If I got a pound of that, I would very likely regret the purchase for many moons.

What is a good price for a good quality gyokuro in the U.S.?
I'll have to buy some from a variety of retailers when I visit in Sept. ...prices are really low in Japan, so a $100/lb gyokuro here is pretty decent.

One US pound equals 2.2 kilograms. According to what you say, $100 (or about ¥10,000 yen) would buy (22) 100 gram bags of Gyokuro. No way! Not real gyokuro, sorry. Gyokuro is not cheap in Japan, not even close.
Re: Gyokuro in bulk?
You got it backwards Kevin, 1 kilogram =~ 2.2 US pounds.Kevangogh wrote:One US pound equals 2.2 kilograms. According to what you say, $100 (or about ¥10,000 yen) would buy (22) 100 gram bags of Gyokuro. No way! Not real gyokuro, sorry. Gyokuro is not cheap in Japan, not even close.
or 1 pound = 453.592g
1/2 pound = 226.796g
a bit more than 2 standard 100g bags like Chip said
the cheapest gyokuro I've enjoyed is from Kevin's store and is ~ $120/lb

You might want to try some of the low end gyokuro from Maiko (Gyokuro Uji?)...I haven't tried but I generally like this vendor

I think Kevin has either been in Japan too long or has been sipping sake instead of sencha.entropyembrace wrote:You got it backwards Kevin, 1 kilogram =~ 2.2 US pounds.Kevangogh wrote:One US pound equals 2.2 kilograms. Gyokuro in bulk?
Traditionally, Gyokuro is not supposed to be an everyday drinking tea. Gyokuro is basically the same tea leaves before it is ground up into matcha, hence why it is so expensive.
In Japan, it is had on special occasions or when receiving important guests. Furthermore, the Japanese only buy it in small quantities to maintain maximum freshness. This was my experience when going to Japan. $100 a pound sounds awfully cheap. Just sayin'!

Re: Gyokuro in bulk?
I have been drinking Hibiki-an Gyokuro Superior for some time. It is $32.00 for 7.5 oz. If you order $36.00 or more, shipping is free. I drink it every morning and I get 2 infusions.
It is important to brew it correctly: 1 1/2 TB tea, 7 oz. water at 140F, brew for 1 min. 40 sec. Second infusion- same water temp, brew for 20 seconds.

Re: Gyokuro in bulk?
Green tea becomes stale over time, once you open the package it's best to consume it quickly.
So you should be prepared to drink it everyday if you order so much : )

Re: Gyokuro in bulk?
I drink it everyday. I get 4 packages in the mail (Total: 15 oz), keep 3 in the fridge, and the one I'm using in an airtight container.
