My First Sencha - My Den's Order!!

Postby Victoria » Feb 13th, '08, 18:28

Today - I took my first step into Japanese greens. Yes hard to believe! I have been waiting for the right time, and after receiving my Den's order last night, well I could wait no more.

I did buy the green starter kit that is so recommend here and something else. The order came so fast, since I live close by. I am so excited! Being somewhat unconventional I decided to go for the Hannari - sencha as my first official taste. The geisha tin is just sooooo gorgeous! If you do not have this tin I would recommend adding it to your collection. Even my boss commented on it. Wow!

Ok, inside the tin was a sealed foil pouch which contains 5 silk tea bags of sencha. I could not believe how fresh and green it smells. Wow, it blew me away! Now I realize this is not the finest quality and it is a tea bag, but still exciting stuff (for me). There were no instructions so with the help of a friend I stumbled through the brewing.

My thoughts? The aroma was a little malty, a little like green beans at one point. The color was more yellow than I was expecting and slightly hazy. I neither loved it nor hated it. The finish was drier than I expected and reminded me of a very light ceylon.

I'm very anxious now to try some higher quality greens and well; just jump in!

Don't do what I did, open up every green tea I received when I received it. I had 30 greens or more open at one point. Then I stressed for a year trying to finish them off.

I read your report and review with great interest, Victoria's Own. The Geisha tin is gorgeous. I am very curious about green teas as well and have no experience or knowledge, except that I love the tea they serve me with my sushi.

I have ordered Green Starter Kit from Den's as well. It has not arrived yet. Please share your experience with it when you get to try it.

Congratulations on your first step!

*Épatant! C'est vachement beau!

*Isn't Den's supposed to be one of the few companies that actually has reasonable brewing suggestions?

*I thought sencha brewed to a shocking green liquor and Chinese brewed yellow? Maybe that's just Fukamushi.

*Either way, you are DOOMED! Your life will never be as it was.

Victoria, you might try some of Den's loose-leaf sencha - it's very good. Those teabags probably aren't the best example of Japanese tea.

...and while you're at it pick up one of those $19 kyuusu's they have, if you haven't already. Your sampler includes some of the loose leaf, though, doesn't it?

we are all DOOMED! to sencha servitude! :D

Yup, welcome to the addiction.

Few can escape sencha's event horizon.
