Matcha thoughts?

Postby knix » May 16th, '08, 14:18

I would like to try Matcha, and am curious of other websites that sell it online. I know about o-cha.com, but is there any in the US, or any that you recommend?

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I don't personally recommend straying from o-cha if you're starting out. There's is some of the best at the best prices. Matcha quality can diminish in the hands of US vendors (Rishi).

However, there are a few other options if you are trying to buy from a Vendor in the states. Joel, a fellow matcha enthusiasts, has good thins to say about Ito En's teas, so you might try them.

Den's Tea is another Japanese company located here in the US, but they have a very limited selection of matcha.

There is also Matcha Source, but they are a reseller, so you pay more than you would if you simply purchased it from the original Japanese vendor.

There are certain missconceptions about matcha and quality; I think the closer you can get to the source, matcha produced by people who know what they are doing, the better the quality and price (O-cha, Hibiki an, Ippodo, and such).

I started with o-cha organic kaoru supreme which is quite easy to brew, has a good taste and is not too expensive.

I find that PacLeaf and Eden Foods both carry high quality matcha. Both are located in the states.

I appreciate the replies.

I found this site http://www.hibiki-an.com/ , has anyone dealt with these people. Looks promising, and anything over $38 is free shipping.

I haven't actually dealt with matcha source, but I have gotten the same matcha they sell from other vendors. I quite like it.

Edit: I just noticed they offer teas from a few vendors now, Koyamen is the one I have had.

I haven't tried their matcha (I ordered their Super Premium four days ago), but their sencha or gyokuro are of good quality.

I've got 2 bags of shincha on order with them right now, but like Oliverco I haven't had their matcha. The 38 min for free shipping is very nice though. Although that number was very amusingly picked. If you look at their prices carefully the free shipping minimum is intended to make you buy two things.

I ordered some of Hibiki's matcha yesterday. I expect it early next week, and I let you all know what I think.
