Just curious - how many of you buy by 1/2 lb or lb of tea?

by inspectoring » Jul 14th, '08, 19:46

Just wondering - does anyone here buy in bulk? My local tea shop give me good discount if I buy 1 lb - almost too good to let go of and I was wondering if you guys have every purchased by the pound...
I must admit I drink about 4-5 cups minimum....

I usually buy 1/4 or 1/2 pound, and I drink 6-10 cups a day. I usually drink various kinds throughout the day, though, and I have been known to buy a pound if it's too good a deal to pass up (and I really know the tea is good).

I usually buy the smallest package available 100gr most of the time, 50gr when possible.

Ditto...especially for greens. Everytime I thought I found THE green tea and tried to buy in bulk, I felt like they ran out of the tea I fell in love with and got stuck with something inferior.

I have however bought 2 100 gram bags of the same thing...but they were heat sealed and/or nitro flushed. I would not be inclined to buy a single big bag of green unless I was splitting the bag with someone right away, etc..
blah blah blah SENCHA blah blah blah!!!

Yeah, mark me down for smaller quantities. If I can get it, my target range is usually 30-60 grams if it's a new tea, and 100grams if it's one I know I like.

I just picked up a tea yesterday that I should have purchased a much larger quantity. It is really excellent.

Normally I'll buy small quantities, especially if it's my first waltz with a tea. However, if the planets align just so and I find a tea that I like at a good price, especially if it's organically grown, I'll snatch quantity of it. It happened recently. I tried Hou De's 2008 Spring Nantou Jade Oolong, liked it, and bought a pound of it (along with other teas). It should arrive tomorrow. :D I'm trying to go organic with all of my "daily" (read most used in each genre) teas.

I'd only buy a pound of green tea if it was divided into a bunch of smaller units that would keep fresh in the fridge until opened, I already knew it was great, and got a fantastic price reduction.

That's a lotta tea, and green goes bad over time.

To me an 1/8 lb is the ideal amount because I am a swinger with my teas. I would hate to get stuck with one tea for any length of time, also i love the experience of going to teashops and purchasing tea that I try and do it as often as possible.

I also try to buy at either 50/55g or 100/110g.

I buy tea in the 100/110g size range - unless it's something I haven't tried before, in which case I'll go with something smaller (where available).

A couple of weeks ago my tea sensei gave me some fukamushi sencha in a 220g packet. It seems so huge!

Definitely is. The largest batch of tea I have right now is a 80g bag of Fukamushi Sencha and that looks large compared to my batch of Gyokuro Suimei (56g).

I also don't think I can get stuck with one type of tea, even though the Fukamushi Sencha taste very good as a daily... it's still pretty expensive.
