Best Green Tea for making Homemade Chai

by yogibarrett » Feb 10th, '09, 16:16

I typically don't drink black tea, but I love to make homemade chai. Any suggestions for a good green tea that I could use to make chai at home?

Thanks!

I've tried a few green tea based chais before and none of them were really that good. Most green tea lacks the punch of black tea that matches up with the spices. If you could find a very bold hojicha that might work. I've tried hoji kuki and genmai as chais and wasn't impressed by either.

Sencha would have problems I think. Since sencha should be prepped at below boiling. Certain hojicha/kukicha/genmai are fine with boiling water.

In Kashmir they make Masala Chai with Gunpowder tea, so you might want to try that one. Otherwise I would go for something roasted or smoky, as it must be able to stand up against the spices.

Good luck
