I will be offering NEW WORK from SEONG IL in a short while. 8 teapots made from pure onggi clay and unglazed throughout. This is a departure from Seong il's body of glazed work. The new teapots should be excellent for Puerh teas and roasted oolongs like Yancha. They are oxidation fired at 1250c. Oxidation firing keeps the clay more porous with good interaction between clay and tea.

They are poems, but Seong il hasn't translated them. He says very difficult for him to translate. I will keep trying to find someone to translate. Some are his poems.

All teapots have multi-hole flat filtration. This is the standard for Seong il teapots.

NEW WORK BY KIM EUNG CHUL

I have just added 5 exceptional onggi clay mixed with local stoneware teapots by Eung Chul. These are masterful works in pure clay, with unglazed interiors, and sea shell and wood ash effects on the exteriors. These are something special. There are only 5 of them offered. They begin with #58.

A few weeks ago I had the privilege of sitting among the work of Seong Il & Eung Chul. I loved looking at tea caddies etc. while drinking tea; but, later I examined some of the teaware closely. Photographs online give some idea that this pottery is special but don't nearly suffice.

I remember:

Even solid white glaze looking like so much > white. I have some Thai celadon that seems to be a solid color at first but then one sees more--beautiful. These two Korean master potters get me to feel (for lack of a better word) colors. I don't just see beauty; also, I feel it.

Size did not matter. A tiny teapot had the impact of a huge masterwork.

Belief in their higher level: It's not easy, & everyone who tries does not succeed; however, lots of people learn crafts. They can be productive, turning out pottery or whatever. A child can be creative, artistic--have an idea to put this next to that, mix colors, etc. The higher level I try to describe, is not just a combination of skilled craft & creativity. These guys know and/or feel something. An example of what I mean: a porcelain server that was unglazed inside & glazed outside. Why would one think to create that? There are reasons for steeping tea in unglazed porcelain, but what reason.....? Never mind, as I held & looked at the server I knew that if not a practical reason (for which there may be one), there is a higher reason for the server to be as it is.

Today, looking at photographs of unglazed pottery by Eung Chul who has mastered glazing, I don't know why he made it. I don't have the work in my hand. If I did, I think I would understand & be happy.

My main point is that Tead Off links us to work much more special than photographs can show us.

I have added 13 new works from Seong Il today. They are mostly teapots and some new gaiwan. Special attention should be paid to the two unglazed porcelain teapots, which are new to Seong il's repertoire. All teapots are unglazed (10 new ones). Please have a look here.
