I'm going to be a "get off my lawn" crank and say I don't prefer the new "reflection" on our avatars. The previous reflection was more subtle and it looked nice. The new one (on some avatars) looks more like a stutter.

The reflection code hasn't been changed in several years. I suspect that some avatars simply looks darker and you may be responding to that.
