I went to the tea house displaying my work yesterday, and due to a lack of space we had to cut 2 pieces from the original plan of exhibiting 12. Anyway, the blue and white scroll with the bamboo and the "tea drinks the man" shown above both came back home with me and remain for sale on my site, though you wouldn't be able to choose the mounting as they are already finished.
Chanoyu Series 1 (chaire 1--painting)
A good friend recently sent me a pile of antique, handmade Japanese sumi paper. It is thinner than the Western handmade paper I usually use, but has a gorgeous cream color from the aging and an incredible texture as well. As a testament to the craftsmanship of this paper, I thought I would first put it to use in a series of paintings devoted to the Japanese tea ceremony, Chanoyu. The first 4 are chaire, which is a kind of tea caddy.
The calligraphy could be translated many ways: "endless treasure", "bottomless treasure", "treasure without end", "boundless treasure", etc., with the "elixir of life" in smaller characters (one piece has my name instead). I hope you enjoy them:

Chanoyu Series 5 (natsume and chasen--painting)
Here is a lacquered natsume and bamboo chasen, highlighted with genuine 24k gold leaf (I ground it into powder). I call this painting "Powdered Peace"

Sorry I have been too busy to post here. Both of my books are now in print, though the second won't be available on American bookshelves til Octoberish...and, issue 6 of The Leaf was just published. I haven't, therefore, been lazy. More artwork soon, though...

“Tea Wisdom” is already on bookshelves globally, as well as Amazon and other online sources. The second book is called “A Life of Tea”, and represents several years of work. It covers all and everything involved in Cha Dao, including history, philosophy, method, etc. It will hit Western bookshelves Octoberish (Amazon as well). They are both in English.
Further out, the companion to “A Life of Tea”, which will be a tea brewer’s guide, and a book on Zen and Tea will be released in 2010.

What a great idea Trent! I think you were steeped in tea when you thought of it. I wish I was there to have a cup of it with you.
With regards to painting with tea, here is an Enso painted with 70-yr-old Sheng Puerh and pigments mixed together into one very big, wet brush. I flicked little bits at the center to represent the dregs at the bottom of the cup (another Enso after all):
And here are two paintings that have actual Puerh wrappers in them--the first is a Chi Tze Bing from the 80s and the second is the nei fei of a 1940s Song Pin Tie Bing for export to Thailand:

Sorry for the long absence
Sorry, again, for the long absence. I have been painting, but without time to put anything online. I have been preparing for two art shows here in Asia. Also, of course, I have had a lot of writing to do. I just finished my three articles for The Art of Tea Magazine, issue # 8, which will be published in Nov. Work is also underway on issue 7 of The Leaf.
My first two books are in print. The second hits American bookstores later this year or early next, though I am arguing to speed up the date. If you are anxious for a copy, contact me.
