I'd say there are many other options and choices out there.

Cheers!

Offering a fairly young tea for $230 without revealing the producer takes a very special level of nerve.

They've got to be kidding.

As they sell samples for 3.75£ you may taste it without taking too many chances.

The price is a little steep but not unheard of. It does look like a lovely beeng. The proof is in the pudding. Sample it :D

Site unseen, I'd still assert that if I had $230 to spend on young sheng, I could do much better.

Given the picture, I'd assert that if I had $230 to spend on young wet storage sheng, I could do much better.

I have bought a fair amount from that shop. Mostly Oolongs.

It is run by a passionate tea drinker (Edward Eisler) who has spread the word of chinese tea in the UK in an enthusiastic dignified way. His business is clearly aimed at the well heeled connoisseur. He has connections to some of the best restaurants in the UK.

I once bought some rather expensive puerh from them, that was rather obscure in description. after a couple of email exchanges with "customer services" I had a personal email from the man himself. My conclusion was that he didn't know a lot about the puerh and had bought it through recommendation and taste (best way IMO). It was a fine tea indeed.

I have never had anything from that shop that wasn't high quality. It wont be cheap but it will be good.

I see the store products as very reliable, but expensive buys. I've wasted much more money on bad tea from other suppliers than what I've spent on Jing's slightly inflated rates.

I'd say you are pretty much guaranteed a good tea from Jing, but you are paying them to chose it and "filter out" the poor examples of tea that are everywhere.

I have to admit I am buying less from them now-a-days as I find the hunt and the gamble with other suppliers rather entertaining (we all love a bargain don't we?) - especially now that I have become more knowledgeable and capable of sniffing out the better buys.

It was this store that enabled my entry into the world of tea, as a matter of fact, and I would go as far as to say they sell the best chinese teas in the UK. (though that isn't really saying much considering how few dealers there are!).

This is just my experience of course.

Yes, I would agree with drumhum.

I post a link sometime ago about a radio programme, which Edward Eisler talked about tea in China.

About $100 USD from this place, and since this is a web-price, chances are it's a good deal cheaper if you bargain in real life, especially if buying in bulk. Look to be the same tea, maybe slightly different storage, but hard to say without trying, with the Jing one probably a bit wetter. It doesn't help that Jing's picture is terrible.

So I'd echo the sentiment: you can probably do better without paying the premium. Sample it if you must, but at that price you can start buying some late 1990s cakes that aren't very famous and wetter stored.

If anything, this looks like a private production, perhaps pressed by Menghai (or possibly not actually Menghai). There's next to none documentation on this tea, afaik. I've personally never seen it. The fact that it uses proper characters means it's probably destined for the Taiwanese market.

I'm more amazed that we have a newbie who resurrects a two year old thread, and that for some reason we pick back up with these threads without skipping a heartbeat... the OP isn't even around anymore.

So to continue on that note, I suppose it's interesting that after 2 years, MarshalN was still able to find a source under half of jingtea.com...
