Yeah. I just listen to my tea kettle. After about 30 seconds of rumble it's ready. For black and oolong anyway. For green I just heat up some water and stick my finger in it. If it burns it's too hot. I heard that's a pretty good rule of thumb....or finger.

Actually yes, there's a lot of people like you. I am a 'minimalist', if you will, too.
I've gathered some notions considering the amount of leaves, water temp. etc.
Like the water is ready just a bit after I finally think it is ready.
The amount of leaves is ok, when I think it's not too perfect.
About the brewing time, I usually just use my nose.
